Zombtober 3 and Pressies for me!

Let's start with Zombtober week 3. Yes another Foundry Wild West Zombie which makes 3 of this exact pose for me now but as long as I don't stand them side by side I should get away with it! It can be noted that he has taken severe torso damage looking at the damage on his back I might suggest by a shotgun but more details such as if it happened when he was alive, dead or undead I shall leave for you to decide.

As with all the zombie gunfighters he still manages to hold onto his gun somehow. I have never been a fan of zombies with weapons but I guess the sculptors are so who am I to quibble about it.  His green coat and blue bow tie mark him as a town gent of some kind. In my mind I was thinking Lawyer as I painted him but once on the table top most players will not be too fussy about previous professions unless I make it a scenario objective.

Well that aside week Three of Zombtober and another zombie figure done so I am just keeping to the pledge and completing the bare minimum of the requirements. As you all know my painting has been focused elsewhere (into 10mm Samurai). Not making excuses I shall of course continue with the project and have already started my next zombie gunfighter as well. That's a hint for next weekend!

I should also say a big THANK YOU to Anne O'Leary from O'Leary Miniatures Blog who ran I prise draw that I was incredibly lucky enough to win. I did actually win a $50 Amazon Voucher. Which was fantastically generous and for which I am truly grateful. Amazon being the big international business that they are could not convert the dollars into pounds sterling, they were contacted both sides of the Atlantic and no joy. So Anne very generously sent me some figures instead. Those figures arrived yesterday. The painted figure is one of Anne's own masterpieces and having already given my word to Fran (The Angry Lurker) that I will pass it on to him. With some reluctance I shall. I have no facilities to store anything display based and only things for the table top battles. Everything else though I shall keep. I have no imeadiate use for the resin figures, although they could make very good Conan demons and the like so they may get painted in the future. Likewise The 6 "Can-Can Dancers" will no doubt get painted despite the fact that I have little use for them.......... but sooner or later I will have a use for some dancing girls!! The Bank hold ups set with figures and bank counter do have a far more obvious use as does the Reaper figure in the Blister. So all in all while I am disappointed that AMAZON could not deal with a change of currency I am over-joyed with what Anne has sent me. Most importantly it is all about the happiness I felt at winning and not the loot/prise/swag. To me this is actually a better prise than the voucher as it is far more personal as I know Anne has followed my blog and put items in the parcel specific to me. And that is so much better in my mind than a generic prise that anyone could have gotten.

Once more Thank you Anne.

That's it for today. More again on Monday assuming I remember my camera tomorrow! All the best and I hope to see you all again soon.

Cheers Clint

Ashigaru with Naginata

Yet more for my Samurai army. Today 8 stands of Ashigaru with Nagaiata. These I think will be the main troop type of the armies. I will as you already know have a variety of troop types, peasents, Ahigaru and Samuari as well as a variety of weapons. As yet I do not have any figures with spears (Yari) but I will be adding some as the time goes on as historically they were more common. For now as I am using up figures I already have and not spending any money and placing orders. As with all the others they are by Pendraken Miniatures

Not a huge amount more to say about them but it is getting to the point where I will be able to show a group shot of the first army so far.

Thanks for looking. Teacher's strike today so looking after my nephew so cutting this short and looking after him.

More again soon. Take care talk soon Best wishes Clint.

SELWG GAMES 2014

There was a camera incident. Yes I cocked up and the batteries ran out. Call it bad planning or more actually no planning at all. Yeah that sounds so much like me. Anyway a quick walk in the rain to the shops and new batteries in the camera and I think I was able to get a picture of most of the games. I know I did not get them all I also can't Identify them as the disruption of getting new batteries shopping bumping into friends and bloggers did completely throw my plan off. So Please just enjoy every one else's hard work. And note for the future my complete and utter lack of planning and organisation. I doubt I will change. So nah nah ner nah nah!

All the best Clint

SELWG SWAG

As you can see I did not go overboard on the loot from SELWG show at Crystal Palace. I will do a report on the show and the games and maybe even write a little about the other bloggers whom I happen to meet there. For now however just a quick peek the goodies I walked out of the show with.

Yes the carrier bag was £6 and the entrance fee was free, although I might have gotten that round the wrong way!

1 Box of Defiance Games UAMC. 24 plastic multi-part science fiction infantry. Very similar to those that might have been encountered on LV426, well at least in my opinion!

2 packets of peter Pig figures for PBI. If you are very interested 1 pack of Artillery crew and one pack of .50 browning HMGs with crew. Just to carry on and round out my US PBI company (just filling in the options).

1 4-Ground General purpose wagon. I am sure many of you will already have got these built and painted, but it is my first one. If I can assemble it, paint it and store it successfully I do anticipate getting a couple more. They are after all half the price of a metal version.

6 Ainsty Castings Blisters, A variety of science fiction bits and bobs. I so easily could have gotten more, but I went small here because I have yet to even start thinking about the 28mm Sci-Fi Board I want to make. But that is a little way in the future so don't read ahead too much.

I did find one thing on the bring and buy a single pack of foundry figures which I scooped up for a fiver. I hope to get it painted in the coming week or maybe two and you can see what it is then. Just one hint, I will include it in my Zomtober (Zombtober) nonsense!

There were a few other things I did consider getting, A couple of rule sets, some more ACW figures in 15mm maybe the start of some Spanish Napoleonic army. I did look at Fields of Glory and FOG Renaissance but they tend to be cheaper on eBay. I did look for a nice Osprey book as well, but they did not have what I wanted at a bargain price so I will wait and pick one up when the price is right for me.

A Show report and eye candy games pics to follow in the next few days.

Final thought just a quick teaser. Speaking to Karl at Crooked Dice I have seen the greens of the new batch of St Trinian's figures (out November) and to be honest I now KNOW I MUST get some! (Even if I never use them I really like the "Feral Fourth Form Gils" And if you don't say nice things about them they may bash you up!)

Cheers Clint.

Zombtober (2)

So here we are the second week in Zombtober and this time a survivor as opposed to another zombie. Slightly different from my usual survivors in that he's modern and on some motorbike. While I am not totally happy with the way he's turned out I will not repaint and he is good enough. If nothing else it makes a tiny bit more room on the painting table which is always a good thing. Painted to represent some school or collage "jock" with a varsity jacket in Purple and cream. I have a few corpses in the same type and colours of Jackets. He rides one of those bright trials bikes that sound like noisy hairdryers. You know the kind I mean. And that is bound to summon extra zeds to the table. To make matters worse he has a one handed machine pistol they type used in "spray and pray" style gun play. Very little chance to hit anything but a lot of chance to make some noise and scare crowds. Ahh the folly of youth! Obviously he's of no use in a wild zombie west but in normal zombie games he should find a purpose, if only to attract more shamblers to the table.

Carl over at hitting on a double 1 is celebrating a milestone by having a giveaway. It is the standard set up, be a follower and leave a comment and get put in a draw to receive some books. I have asked not to be put in the draw as I already have far too much to read at the moment without making the stack by my bed get any bigger. (I doubt that will stop me at SELWG though in fact I will be looking out for a couple of Osprey books if the price is right.)

And finally for today I will be posting on this blog irregularly for the next few days as real life is interfering a little at the moment, as well as SELWG show and a few other things. Nothing to worry about just keeping it loose for the moment so I don't trap myself into saying I will post again and then having to miss a day. (As I did yesterday). I will try to do a show report and a lot haul in the next few days and then get back to my normal posting of every other day. I will admit here and now my predicted loot haul at SELWG is looking very small but who knows what I might find on the bring and buy or what impulse buys might suddenly become VITAL!

Anyway Hope to update on Monday so hang in there and catch you all soon. Best wishes Clint.

The Army Grows.

Slowly ever slowly I am growing the 10mm Samurai army. Today are 2 more units of Samurai. I say unit as I am thinking od 4 stands as being a unit and no other reason, I could equally say another 8 stands. As with all the others they continue to be by Pendraken Miniatures simply because it avoids compatibility issues such as scale creep and sculpting style. Observant people will note that two banners have a red stripe at the banner base and two do not. This allows me to identify units within an army quite quickly and has nothing to do with historical accuracy.

They are two separate units I promise! Clearly they are all in the same pose but that just makes it easier to identify what they are armed with. When I start a second force I will keep all the armour as red as Il Nomasa did. I will no doubt talk more about that when I do them. The army is starting to come together now and once I do a few more units a whole army shot will no doubt be in order. At the moment though there are still not sufficient to warrant it.

Some of you will know I am not a huge believer in KICKSTARTERS. I can and do see a place for them but I also feel that there are just too many of them, and yet yesterday I made a small pledge to my second one! Only $30 before we get to involved in jeering at me and saying "I told you so!" As I do not trawl the kickstarters looking for projects I was actually on the companies home page checking out their products and happened to notice the kickstarter. HERE it is if anyone cares to see where my money has gone. It has a mere 9 hours left to run and the stretch goals are not so massive to attract anyone particularly, However as a fan of Science Fiction in general and the Alien Films in particular I felt it purposeful to support them. Way way way in the future I can see myself doing an ALIENS game but that is at least 1 year and probably 2 before I get that far. I really do have far to much to do with these Samurai before I get carried away with other ideas.

And that's Wednesdays update, the next one will be Friday. I hope to have my week 2 Zombtober figure done by then. As I will not be able to post it on Sunday due to SELWG. So with luck on Friday something 28mm to show. Until then take care have fun and paint a zombie or two! All the best Clint.

Inspiration and background (1)

I forgot my Camera! What! What has that got to do with inspiration and background? Clint you have lost it! I would normally do a club AAR on Sunday after club but as I forgot my camera it might not be a very good AAR so I am back talking about Samurai!

Many of you will know I live in Gillingham in Kent. What many of you will not realise is that Gillingham is twinned with a couple of Japanese towns. Yes I know most towns have a twin town but why has Gillingham been twined with towns in Japan? You will have noticed the book and DVD on the right. That's a big clue. Change all the names and this book was pretty much a true story, obviously adapted into a story and then TV series. The lead character in this story is "John Blackthorne" who was based on "Will Adams". And "Will Adams" was born in Gillingham. ( Click HERE for the wiki!).
The Will Adams Monument on the A2

Antony J Bryant in the osprey Campaign book "Sekigahara" hi-lights this connection and goes on to say that the Shogun book has the political setting about right. Thus we have a local history link to my current wargaming interest. In fact I would say more than local history as it does link to the Far East and that can hardly be considered local.

One of the plaques on the monument.
While the monument was erected in 1934 and the events go back circa 1600 AD until the towns were twinned most people in this area were unaware of this person. More recently however roads, roundabouts and medical centres have all taken the Will Adams name. So growing up I was not made aware of this local hero. Typically English understatement the town did not celebrate and hardly acknowledge William Adams. Personally I think we could do with a grander monument and perhaps a small visitor centre, nothing too fancy perhaps a permanent display in a local museum. (There are no museums in Gillingham we ain't very cultural here!)

OK enough of the waffle and back to the wargaming. So I thought to post this to show that some background to wargaming need not be all stuffy and involve much reading. And indeed can have local and international overtones.Obviously I am reading around the subject as well as re-reading "Shogun" by James Cavell for the third time ( you can see by the cover it has been read a few times already, and I got it second hand as well). It is a most excellent book and TV series and I would recommend it without hesitation even if you are not interested in wargaming with Samurai. For me it is very gratifying to have such a strong local link and to think that "Will Adams" was the FIRST western Samurai!

I should have some more painted figures by the time Wednesday comes around for my next post. I had anticipated a game report today so I had nothing varnished and ready to photograph. So until Wednesday when I will do my next update I hope you found something of interest here today. Not very wargaming I'll have to admit, but I think it is of interest and with luck I hope you do too.

Best Wishes Clint.

Zombtober (Week 1, Figure 1)

Only managed to get one zombie done in the first week of Zombtober. But 1 is better than none. He is a single Wargames Foundry Wild west Zombie gunfighter. Unlike most horde zombies he is armed with an antiquated rifle a holstered pistol and even a sheathed knife. If he can use them is another matter of course.

Most of the paint work was done with washes  as I wanted a really dirty and grimy look. Not really too much more to say about him. Just your average ho-hum run of the mill wild west zombie with a gun. He fits in with the others I have done and the horde slowly grows larger.

I know it's hardly a horde but it does continue to grow and expand and by the end of Zombtober should be over 20 metal figures. which should be more than enough to discourage a player or two.

That's todays very brief update. Just touching base really and as week 1 of Zombtober closes at least I can put something up which is relevant to the event. Even if only 1 figure. The painting table continues to be cluttered with a variety of projects in several scales and will no doubt be worse after SELWG>

I shall do my usual club report on Monday. Tomorrow we are playing an ACW game with two new members. Graham and myself and the two new members Ian and Matt. I have no idea what the rest of the club will be doing so it will be nice to see what's going on when I get there.

That's it for today. Have a good weekend and next update on Monday.

Cheers Clint

Yet More 10mm Samuari.

As you can see I am still working on my 10mm Samurai armies (not even half way yet!) So if you are not bored by them yet I think you will be by then end.

Today we have two more units a Samurai foot unit all carrying swords. It is a shame they are all in the same pose, I would have liked some variety but as I only have one type of samurai I am limited to what I can do. In the future I will buy different packs that way the army will look more vibrant.

The second unit is another 4 bases of Ashigaru Arquibusiers. Painted exactly the same way as before they have a very uniform look. For Ashigaru I prefer a uniform look all in the same pose and all painted the same way. On the table top they all like they belong, yes I will do a group shot another time, but I need to do a few more units before it will look worthwhile.

I have several other things part painted so with luck I might have something different to show next time. 10mm 15mm and 28mm including historical and zombies. I will not predict what will be next though it will all depend on what I feel like in the next few days.

So until Friday when I do my next update take care, have fun and get some paint on some figures.

Best wishes Clint

Battle of Worunzov Road

I was delighted to accept an invitation to play a game with the Rejects> This would be the 2nd game at Posties Shed of War and while my knowledge of the Crimean war.....Charge of the light Brigade, Mary Secall, Charge of the Heavy Brigade, Florence Nightingale, et al was severely limited to the level of the average man in the street I was again made welcome and comfortable and made to feel at home and at ease. Postie droped pieces of paper on the dining table and I selected the closest one. Ray took the last one, the last one left. Ray had been saying before the game that he did not want to play the Turks. So as luck would have it Ray got the Turks. The Moral of the introduction is never ever say what you don't want as it improves the chances of selecting them!
My initial setup
Arriving in the shed of war all the troops were already in place and we took our positions and Postie gave us a briefing. The Battle of Worunzov Road was set 2 days after the  Battle of the Chernaya (click the link to get the Wiki of the battle). The basic briefing is that the Russians were keen to put the defeat behind them and attacked the weak allies flank. Ray gives a better synopsis HERE! I suggest you read it as it will make a lot of my waffle clearer. There was no pregame special rules or opportunity to discuss plans and tactics.

Rays Cavalry.
I was the Russian 2nd in command opposite Rays Turkish force. Both Russian commanders Responded to the set up by moving everything as fast forward as we possibly could. 8 inches at 15mm figure scale is not at all bad. My Cossacks sprinted away on my left. Light irregular horse I needed them to scout and probably die finding Rays hidden reserves. They managed the first but avoided the second. Rays Cavalry charged them and they fled as far as it was possible for them to go without leaving the table well out of the way and then regrouped. Job done as far as I was concerned. This allowed me to move up my 2 units of Hussars ready to engage Rays Horse.

Opening moves

The Turks and Sardinians started to use their artillery but to little effect and the whole Russian line moved forward yet again. I managed to move my artillery to the high ground and by the third turn had got them set up so they could fire over my troops heads and into the defending troops.

Russian artillery set up at last

Cavalry pre Charge
2 moves from contact. By that I mean of course one normal move and one charge the turn after. After the normal move I elected to fire the front ranks of the Russian columns despite the fact that I would need a 6 on a d6 to do any damage. If I played the game again I would probably hold my fire as predictably this had little or no effect on the defensive line. It did however make me feel like I was being aggressive and taking the battle forward. Ray held his fire, as he hoped that the first shot advantage would be worth just getting a single shot off. One good shot as opposed to two less powerful ones.

In these rules you have to write charges down before you carry them out. In this turn almost everything charged. There was a little discussion as I had my Cossacks charge into the rear of the Turkish cavalry who were also charging my hussars who were in turn charging the Turkish cavalry.

The Clash of Cavalry

Thump! we all rolled dice and while I rolled High Ray did less well. I was able to win both cavalry battles, take both standards and kill or capture the Divisional commander.

Cavalry Battle Aftermath
At this stage Rays cavalry were all gone and I still had 2 units of Hussars and 2 very small units of Cossacks. Evidently this is the best that the Russian cavalry have ever done in the shed of war according to Postie. I have no knowledge of this but must state I was very pleased with the result. I had expected to loose one if not both clashes but sometimes luck goes with you.

The infantry pre-charge
When it came to the Infantry pretty much everything charged the thin line of defenders. Mostly it went my way as I was able to bring 2 units in column against each line unit defending so I did have the weight of numbers. As mentioned above Ray had decided to hold his fire till the last minute. While it was effective it was not strong enough to stop the attacks going in. The Turks, under Ray, did OK with one unit defending a hedge managing to push back the two Russian units who attacked and take their colours, one routing and one falling back.

And after the charge.
I did have a Cossack unit which failed to motivate and thus failed a morale check. The following turn only due to bad dice Ray failed to inflict any damage so on the last turn of the game they would have managed to slip away.

At this stage though every division on the board was in need of a morale check due to routers. Everyone passed and we played one more turn. Nothing much changed in the overall battle and the allies conceded.

Last Turn
Conclusion: There are a number of lessons to be learned.

Big hefty Russian units can soak up damage while small Turkish and Sardinian ones cannot.

All reserves from all sides should be brought on as soon as possible.

Light Artillery is not as effective as the firer would hope. And has a much shorter range that I would first expect.

There are of course a number of personal observations about the people as opposed to the rules (myself Included), that I will not share. nothing negative more concerned with play style and preferences. They are probably because the others knew what to expect from the rules while I was far less familure with them.

Overall a decisive Russian Victory. 26 points to 6.

That's it for today I hope this came out readable and coherent. There is no guarantees of that though. I shall post again on Thursday. Until then take care and have fun. All the Best Clint.

Post Script: I am a winner! Many thanks to Anne O'Leary for her blog giveaway and Yippee I won something!
