Burke and Hare?

No story today. But another two figures from the painting challenge. These were originally planned to be finished before Christmas for the "villains" bonus round. Unfortunately I missed the date. So I did think to get them done for the "Casualty" round but as I had the dead spaceman for that they did not make that round either. Therefore they were just finished for the sake of being finished.

So now I have two random grave diggers dressed in Victorian clothing. I call them grave diggers as they are from west wind productions Empire of the Dead range and named after the infamous Burke and Hare who were a pair of Victorian Grave robbers and murderers. As I said I call them grave robbers, but they could equally be treasure hunters, archaeologists or run of the mill grave diggers or anything else I can imagine. I won't say Tomb Raiders though as let us be honest they in no way resemble Lara Croft!

Don't get too excited and think I am heading into EotD! I am not! But they are done and will go into my wild west/weird west figure box.

That's it for today. Thanks for looking. All the best Clint.

More Villains.

Well here are the things that I started for the Villains bonus round, but did not finish in time. No excuses I dithered and procrastinated and just did not get them done in time. So I finished them and sent the Pictures to Curt anyway a day after. Points wise It has made no difference as I did get the bonus points from the challenge for the Mexican Bandits. But these extra Villains are now finished so no point in not sharing them here.

First off we have an Artizan Designs Mexican Bandit. From the same pack as the other two (Banditos II). As the sculptor had given the figure frayed trousers I decided that he was not the most successful of bandits so gave him simple hat and trousers. I wanted to try out a new Green paint and for no other reason that became his shirt colour. I think he probably stole it from some where. The light blue scarf around his neck is mostly to inject a spot of brightness. I did consider a red scarf but went for the blue as it lifts the figure somewhat.

Of all three bandits he really was the most fun to paint and has turned out to be my favourite by far. I am sure he will get some table top action in the near future.

Scanning down you will also notice the very last (at least for now) of my Wild West Zombies. These with the others have been very simple to paint. Just base colours and a couple of dark washes. In this case a heavy grey was and a dark brown was. Then just pick out a few details and they are all done.  Honestly they really have been that simple. I was surprised at the fact that people seemed to prefer them to the bandit, as they really were just so easy to paint and that I spent more time on the Mexican than all 4 of those put together. Still it is not my place to decide what others like or dislike and I was happy with each and every comment.

The analogue-hobbies painting challenge has been a fantastic incentive to get things done. It has meant I have spent at least an hour each and every day (except strangely Yesterday) painting prepping and basing figures. The results from all over the globe are impressive so I would recommend checking it regularly as there are several new posts each day.

That is where I will leave it today, thanks for popping by and I hope to see you again soon.

All the best Clint

Zombtober 4

I will admit that I am a little torn about this being the last Zombtober weekend or not. SO I may post one more if I get one done next weekend. Not that I have any started, but they are at least in the painting line.

Anyway another Zombie Wild West Gunfighter. Of them all I think this is my favourite sculpt. I like the lurching forward movement and for no other reason. And It is only as I type this that I realise the figure is left handed. Very sinister! Now I am wondering how many left handed figures I have and how many of those are zombies. Hmmmm! He fits in with the others and that's all that matters at this stage.

I have also included a group shot of what I have achieved in Zombtober! 1 survivor on a motorbike and 3 wild west zombie gunfighters. Not the biggest amount painted in a month for a project, but I have managed to do one every week which I feel happy about.

The other thing I should mention is Dwarvember. I am in two minds about this I do have some 10mm dwarfs to paint, so I may get involved and I may not. As I do want to continue with current projects that I have enthusiasm for and not get side-tracked. I have some more Samurai on the paint table and some more PBI. Mentioning PBI I wasted a day thinking about a new army which did stem from a comment Mathyoo made. I realised that an Aerosan force on skis and some t-34's would look really cool. Then it dawned on my I don't think I would ever use it, nor could I find any 15mm WW2 Russian figures on skis! So eventually the idea faded!

Anyway I think this is Zombtober drawing to a close for me. As mentioned above I still have a couple more gunfighters to do so while the painting month is coming to an end the painting and project is not!

That's it for today thanks for looking. Have a good weekend I hope the storm (St Jude) passes by without incident to you and yours. All the best and another update on Tuesday.

Post script: Re-working the waterfall on the TAR7AN board..... No you can't have a photograph just yet!

Cheers then, Clint

Zombtober 3 and Pressies for me!

Let's start with Zombtober week 3. Yes another Foundry Wild West Zombie which makes 3 of this exact pose for me now but as long as I don't stand them side by side I should get away with it! It can be noted that he has taken severe torso damage looking at the damage on his back I might suggest by a shotgun but more details such as if it happened when he was alive, dead or undead I shall leave for you to decide.

As with all the zombie gunfighters he still manages to hold onto his gun somehow. I have never been a fan of zombies with weapons but I guess the sculptors are so who am I to quibble about it.  His green coat and blue bow tie mark him as a town gent of some kind. In my mind I was thinking Lawyer as I painted him but once on the table top most players will not be too fussy about previous professions unless I make it a scenario objective.

Well that aside week Three of Zombtober and another zombie figure done so I am just keeping to the pledge and completing the bare minimum of the requirements. As you all know my painting has been focused elsewhere (into 10mm Samurai). Not making excuses I shall of course continue with the project and have already started my next zombie gunfighter as well. That's a hint for next weekend!

I should also say a big THANK YOU to Anne O'Leary from O'Leary Miniatures Blog who ran I prise draw that I was incredibly lucky enough to win. I did actually win a $50 Amazon Voucher. Which was fantastically generous and for which I am truly grateful. Amazon being the big international business that they are could not convert the dollars into pounds sterling, they were contacted both sides of the Atlantic and no joy. So Anne very generously sent me some figures instead. Those figures arrived yesterday. The painted figure is one of Anne's own masterpieces and having already given my word to Fran (The Angry Lurker) that I will pass it on to him. With some reluctance I shall. I have no facilities to store anything display based and only things for the table top battles. Everything else though I shall keep. I have no imeadiate use for the resin figures, although they could make very good Conan demons and the like so they may get painted in the future. Likewise The 6 "Can-Can Dancers" will no doubt get painted despite the fact that I have little use for them.......... but sooner or later I will have a use for some dancing girls!! The Bank hold ups set with figures and bank counter do have a far more obvious use as does the Reaper figure in the Blister. So all in all while I am disappointed that AMAZON could not deal with a change of currency I am over-joyed with what Anne has sent me. Most importantly it is all about the happiness I felt at winning and not the loot/prise/swag. To me this is actually a better prise than the voucher as it is far more personal as I know Anne has followed my blog and put items in the parcel specific to me. And that is so much better in my mind than a generic prise that anyone could have gotten.

Once more Thank you Anne.

That's it for today. More again on Monday assuming I remember my camera tomorrow! All the best and I hope to see you all again soon.

Cheers Clint

Zombtober (Week 1, Figure 1)

Only managed to get one zombie done in the first week of Zombtober. But 1 is better than none. He is a single Wargames Foundry Wild west Zombie gunfighter. Unlike most horde zombies he is armed with an antiquated rifle a holstered pistol and even a sheathed knife. If he can use them is another matter of course.

Most of the paint work was done with washes  as I wanted a really dirty and grimy look. Not really too much more to say about him. Just your average ho-hum run of the mill wild west zombie with a gun. He fits in with the others I have done and the horde slowly grows larger.

I know it's hardly a horde but it does continue to grow and expand and by the end of Zombtober should be over 20 metal figures. which should be more than enough to discourage a player or two.

That's todays very brief update. Just touching base really and as week 1 of Zombtober closes at least I can put something up which is relevant to the event. Even if only 1 figure. The painting table continues to be cluttered with a variety of projects in several scales and will no doubt be worse after SELWG>

I shall do my usual club report on Monday. Tomorrow we are playing an ACW game with two new members. Graham and myself and the two new members Ian and Matt. I have no idea what the rest of the club will be doing so it will be nice to see what's going on when I get there.

That's it for today. Have a good weekend and next update on Monday.

Cheers Clint

Ths town aint big enough!

I have had a roller coaster of a weekend. I will do a post on Wednesday about the Milton Hundreds open day and the things I walked out with (Swag, loot and freebies.) I will not do a post about my sisters marital problems but that is deffinitly the down part of the roller coaster and It meant that I was not able to sort out the Wild Zombie West game as well as I would have liked. But enough excuses I can hear you saying get on with it.

So getting on with it. I told the players the situation. Which is to say that they were all travelling by stage coach and during the day they were unable to change the horses as the way station was a grizzly sight and everyone was dead and partially eaten by animals and the horses had escaped the corral and so they had all been rushed into town with the current horses covered in sweat and close to collapse. Thus all the players arrived on foot in the same location at this stage unaware of the zombie apocalypse.

It was dark, the lights were out and the stage coach horses ready to collapse so most of the players headed to the saloon even though no lights were on and on one was in the streets. Two players (Fat Pedro and Randy Cockspur) decided they would look elsewhere and for go the temptations of liquor!

Figures started to emerge onto the street and amble towards the players from all directions. Getting closer Deacon realised that these were some sort of abomination from the pit and fired a scatter gun at the shamblers knocking them down but not killing them. "Preacher"  and Manco went into the saloon and still failed to identify the two figures inside as being undead. They were promptly attacked. Gary Winchester loitered outside and tried to peer into the shadowy gloom as figure moved closer. " were clearly not quite human but the third looked convincing enough in the dark. Warm Leg Bob identified a walker and plugged it with his sixgun out side the saloon.

Pedro was moving towards the Sherriff's office he had a machete and being Mexican he had an extra clue from the name of the town ( Negro de la ciudad de cabra) while Randy Cockspur decided that late night shopping was the thing that made most sense to his limited thinking lumberjack and he looted some cans of peaches from the general store.

Meanwhile back at the saloon Manco had been attacked and bitten and Preacher also attacked had managed to fight the rotter off. Three zeds had closed in on Mr Winchester and while he was able to survive the combat it did result in him running for an alley way trying to put some distance between the growing numbers and himself. Eventually he manages a fighting retreat and slays two zombies but takes a bite to his torso for his trouble. Preacher scrambles out of the saloon and kicks the swing doors knocking the pursuing zeds flat. As a clump of figures they reform at the other side of the street. Randy continues his supermarket sweep and stuffs a pistol into his jacket and Pedro finding the law office/jail empty helps himself to a carbine and some ammunition. But all over the board the zombies are closing in. Players decide that there is little to be gained firing weapons randomly each time rousing more of the biters and decide the best plan is to get out alive.

Each of the bitten players had to roll d6 each activation and on a 6 they would collapse and start to turn. So each turn the rest looked on hopefully! (Yes that is my club for you). They both kept rolling 5's but not once did either of them get a six! CURSES.

Warm Leg and Deacon headed west down the street concentrating on distance and not shooting until Warm Leg made it the first to exit the board, followed moments later by Deacon. Both alive unhurt and un bitten!

A bitten Gary Winchester escaped the board North East having skirted buildings and avoided any further zombies by dodges rather than gunfire. Manco also bitten headed due east third off of the board but in danger of infection from a bitten left arm. Preacher went south a bit more ragged than he started but otherwise in good health. Randy climbed out the back window of the store after a series of melees where he wielded his lumberjack axe against unarmed zeds. It lasted a long time often fighting 2 zombies at the same time but eventually he clambered through the window and left the town south westerly direction the only player with food for the following day.

The window at the back of the jail had bars so he was forced to exit onto the main street into the sight of the zombies. Which then gave chase. The zombies with guns had a 1 in 6 chance of remembering they had fire arms but if one fired they all would remember. Until now they had not managed to get a 6. But now as 3 gun zombies came into range they suddenly remembered. two missed but the guy with the shotgun hit and while I rolled a 1 for damage the shotgun did knock Pedro off of his feet. This allowed them to get closer. These gun zombies could so easily mobbed him at this stage, but instead they rolled a 6 again and decided to shoot and not move. All three missed and Pedro managed to escape the town South south west in direction.

The game was not a complete shambles but there was so much I could and should have done better If I'd had a little more time to prepare. Not being overly critical but I did have to wing it a bit here and there because I forgot the rules and some of the charts and tables. I took the stance just to keep it going rather than look everything up. And being very self critical I know I did not give all the players the best game.

Still looking to the future I can see several improvements I need to make and with a bit more preparation I can see the idea working out.

I will post a report about the Milton Hundreds Wargames club open Day on Wednesday. Until then take care and have some fun Clint

A fist ful of Zombies,

New Recruits
The Horde so far!
Good morning. In the last couple of days I have managed to source and paint 5 additional zombie gunfighters. Again these are Wargames Foundry figures and thus they are all duplicates of figures already painted. As can be clearly seen there are only 5. The pack would normally contain 7 figures but as they were a gift from a friend it would be churlish in the extreme to whine about it. Let us be blunt when it comes to lead all donations are VERY gratefully received. So thanks Matt, he's not a blogger or known to my club but we go back years and he used to ref "Deadlands RPG" and these are the left overs. I have never played "Deadlands" as I was not living in the same part of the world at the time.

The second picture shows the horde at this stage. It is quite meagre at this time but it is slowly growing and increasing. As mentioned previously I will be using my normal 20th Century horde zombies just to bulk out the ranks and create much more of a threat. My players will already have been looking at the tufts on the bases. This is because I activate zombies in two separate phases Those with "tufts" on the base and those without. This system came about when it became apparent that players were waiting for the zombies to move and then move just far enough away not to get eaten. By having two separate activations it makes it harder for the players to act in this way. Both activations are random as are individual players so usually one or more players will act between the zombie activations.

That's todays painting. I shall be travelling to the Milton Hundreds Wargames Club Open day today (yes I will take some snaps) and The club Wild West Zombie game tomorrow so a busy games weekend for me. So with luck I will post the AAR on Monday and the open day report on Wednesday. At least that is the plan! take acre and chat again soon. Best wishes Clint.

Western Gunfight Zombies.

Some of you will know I am planning a Western Zombie Game for the club on Sunday, the rest of you have just found out! That being the case I thought I should start painting a few more zombies. Most zombies in the game will be my "normal" horde zombies but I thought to add a few more zombies toting weapons and dressed in period clothes. They will of course function slightly differently in the game. The top two pictures are freshly painted "Foundry" castings and the Third picture has two zombies which have been shown before, just included for completeness.

7 figures to a pack armed and dressed with a variety of weapons and clothing. Quite obviously they can be used for any Victorian era setting but are most suitable as wild/weird West figures because one of them is wearing chaps. 5 are pistol armed including a couple of heavy pistols. 1 has a rifle and the other a double barrelled shotgun. They all look suitably zombie like in both pose and facial grimace. While Foundry only do 1 pack different colours on the clothing should or the skin tone should allow for enough variety especially if the figures in the same poses are on different parts of the Table.

I hope to get the opportunity either today or tomorrow to give the rules I shall be using for the game on my dedicated zombie blog (28 Dice Later ). I do not update it very often and am not looking for followers or page views as it is mostly for club and ZBA interaction.

I shall do another post on this blog on Saturday. Until then take care enjoy a quiet few days and with luck talk soon. All the best Clint.

Pinkertons

The three figures are from the Artizan range of Wild West miniature. The actual pack was AWW025 Pinkerton Detectives 1. Each was a joy to paint and will suit any Western or Victorian game. Yes even a game with zombies werewolves and other such things that go bump in the night. The Out House is another building by Tim Wade at Frontline Wargaming. I am not sure if it is still available as he seems to has stopped producing his Western Buildings now that companies are producing laser cut wooden ones. Personally I think this is a same the resin ones do not require assembly and being heavier are less prone to movement on the table top (which should not happen but we all know it does!)

 Ok each in turn.

The first one is armed with a single pistol. I went for grey hair and bear as I wanted the figure to appear as a grizzeled veteran. There is a mended tear/rip in his duster on the right leg hinting that he would rather spend his money elsewhere than on fancy duds. And yet his grey bowler hat does appear new. Maybe either the coat is lucky or the hat is new and he would rather have town clothes than country clothes.  Whatever his story is I painted him with the name "Warm Leg Bob" in my mind as that is the name given to me by one of the players in my series of planned games in the Zombie Wild west!
The next figure Not intended for the Weird West is one of the few figure I have for this period who is wearing spectacles. Rather than painting them black or blue I decided that red-pink was exactly the right colour. The rose tinted spectacles will help with the glare of the sun and give the figure a very specific character. Spurs can be seen below the brown duster and the '73 Winchester rifle makes me think he's been tracking down don heinous villains out in the old west. This is one of the joys of this period all the figures are very characterful and as you paint them you make your own story up as you go. Obviously who ever picks him up and commands the figure on the table can and probably will make up their own reasons for the clothes and armaments.

Lastly for today probably the figure I liked the most prior to painting. (Now of course I like them all). This detective has obviously spent some money on duds and gives the appearance of only wanting the best of things. The hat the coat the bow tie all look new and in good condition and while he also has spurs on the fact that he wars a monocle suggests he's more used to a civilised setting. Finishing his look is a gold watch chain and gold monocle chain which hopefully should make it look like his the most successful Pinkerton of the three.

That's it for today. As you can tell I have really enjoyed painting these three and I think they will add considerably to my growing Wild West setup. there are of course more to follow and with luck and a bit of work they should be ready for Tuesday's next blog post. So until them take care and have fun. All the best Clint.

Silverbacks

These are not new, but I have re-painted them. They are both from Newline Designs and are actually 28mm Sasquatch or Yetis and part of the "Mythic West" Range. I purchased these 2012 at the Broadside show and painted them with white fur. This week I have re-painted and re-based them to better fit where I think I am heading with the 7TV game. Having decided that I did not want a snowy waste board for the game it made sense to turn them into giant apes as it makes them much more versatile. I can still use them as sasquatch should I choose,

Most importantly this change of colour scheme still keeps my options open for the game board.  I am fairly sure the board will now be a jungle of some kind but the exact nature of the game is still open for debate/discussion. It could easily slip from a type of King Solomon's Mines type setting to a Tarzan type game, or even a Conan style game. It all depends on what I feel like when I wake up in the morning. Which is both dangerous and exciting at the same time.  Your guess is as good as mine. To be honest I would not even rule out "Predator!" after all it all a good use for a Jungle. And before anyone asks " Ainsty-castings make some clear resin "Alien Hunters"  I'll let you guess what they may look like.

That's it for today, as ever comments and suggestions are always welcome. I shall try to do a board update on Saturday, please don't expect too much from it at present as I am at the sealing the plaster phase so much of it will look the same. Although some of it will have changed and I hope the first hint of colour will be applied.

Anyway until Saturday take care, have fun and paint yourself some nice figures. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Cheers Guys.

Ghost Town (1) THE Dead.

Well I have struggled to get anything painted. Here are 9 dead markers though. Obviously for wild west shoot out games. They were originally made by Tim Wade from Frontline, but I don't think they ever got into production so you will have to find another source or start sculpting your own should you want any dead markers in cowboy clothes! Someone must make some though so a search will no doubt turn up something. These are 28mm in size and cast in resin. They were, I think , the first things that Tim sculpted. And while not perfect they do have their place on the games table and I am very happy to own them.

I will be the first to admit that these are pretty roughly painted, but they are good enough to mark where your cowpokes have fallen. There are a variety of poses and I really wish that I had a few more. I'll have to ask around club members and see if there were any given out. I know what you are thinking! and these dead markers do bring my wild west zombie game idea one step closer. Add to that that I bought some packs of Foundry Zombie Gunfighters at BROADSIDE which I hope to start the paint on next week and It' will not belong before "Ghost town!" Zombie west hits the club tables. (I am aiming for August).

That's todays very brief post. Thanks for taking the time to pop by and see what I'm working on. Hope to see you good people again real soon!

Cheers Clint

No obvious film tie in at all! Honest Guvnor!

As mentioned in the title this figure seems to have been film inspired. It is another figure from Ainsty Castings Weird West range.  I just can't think where they might have gotten the idea from. I wonder could it be film inspired? Yeah I thought so to. It is the figure that did attract me to the whole range in the first place. Obviously he's not limited to the weird west and will no doubt get used by me as a contemporary zombie hunter. Having not watched the film I am unhindered by preconceived ideas so I went for the most obvious colours. There are a total of 3 different greys and a black base on the clothes. Brown shoes obviously as only a braggart would wear black shoes and a black suit in this period. Nowadays anything goes, even trainers! Standards are definitely slipping Gentlemen.

The last figure in the range is what I thought on first inspection to be some kind of wild west mage. but a closer look revealed it to be a vampire. So I had to repaint the face a lighter shade of flesh which has left is a little messy, but it will pass the two foot test so I won't dwell on my inadequacies any longer. As it was now a vampire I went for a very dark purple hue to the suit with the hope that it might look a little more "exotic". As mentioned above I have not seen the film so the colours are my own choices and not that of the films wardrobe mistress. I don't even know if this figure is part of the film but given that it is a vampire in the west I think it likely. Maybe someone can let me know.

That's it for today. Next update to my wargaming life in two day. So with luck I'll see you then. All the best Clint.

Billy the Kid?

Another figure from the Ainsty Castings Weird West range. This figure is supposedly "Billy the Kid" but it really could be any character you wanted it to be. Again sculpted by Ian Mountain who has a nice understated style. No deep folds in the cloth and a very clean looking face, and not to much of a caricature. I only found out today that these figures were "crowd funded" so I would like to thank everyone who made the pledges and bought these figures into being.  As you can see I have painted in mostly browns but with a very dark grey (almost Black) shirt, although this could be a waist coat Black boots and a blue neckerchief. I Like the fact that the two pistols are quite small it makes them look more realistic than some of the big clumpy guns you see on some figures.
Overall I am happy with the result although I did muck up his eye and had to repaint it. I will be the only person who worries about it, so no biggie.
Only two more to go from this pack so I will have them finished I hope by Wednesday. It's a club day tomorrow so I should have some kind of AAR on Monday. No idea what we will be playing as yet. I had hoped to carry on with my Caen Campaign, but two of the key players may not be able to make it, so I have postponed that game for now.

Anyway it's a long weekend for those of us in the UK so the weather is bound to be horrid! However enjoy the extra day off of work if you can and chat again on Monday. Best Wishes Clint.

Western Undead

Here are my two latest 28mm figures. Both from different companies, yet both wild west zombies. Starting on the left we have another figure from the AINSTY CASTINGS Villains Weird West pack. Two days ago I finished the werewolf from that pack so only 1 more from that pack to paint. I will undercoat him this afternoon so maybe over the weekend. The figure on the right is from Reaper Miniatures it is less versatile as it is totally in western dress from head to toe and even carrying a pistol.

While I have no use at the moment for wild west zombies I did like both figures so that moved them up the painting schedule quite swiftly.  Maybe I will sort a game out featuring western zombies sometime in the future.

That's it for today thanks for tuning in and I'll post again on Thursday. Until then take care all the best Clint.

Weird West

Here are two figures from Ainsty Castings sculpted by Ian Mountain. They come from the Weird West range. When I say range they only do two packs at the moment (Heroes and Villains). Each pack has 3 figures, either good guys/girls or the baddies. Each pack retails for £7.50, but at Salute they did a deal of both packs for £10.00.  Here we have a werewolf from the Villains pack and a female Indian from the Heroes pack. Neither of these figures were why I bought the packs but I really do like them now. Both figures are single piece castings with no flash and only minor mould lines. Overall very nice castings and In my opinion well worth the money.

Ladies first, I have done a close up so you can see just how nicely sculpted the figures are. Other than the blue in the hair I have kept to very natural colours. If anyone asks I'll just say the blue came from an army uniform, so don't question it as I tried red first and it looked unbalanced on the figure. I have used red as an accent colour contrasting against the buff base colour on her wrists. I do not think her clothing is authentic and that really is my only criticism of the figure. As she's next to a werewolf I can suspend reality for a while and just enjoy her as a very nice figure sculpt. She carries a "Bowie Knife" very openly but no sheath for it and no other weapons. But the knife, expression and stance lead me to believe that she's all ready for action. You can probably tell that I have really enjoyed painting her.

The werewolf was a struggle for me. Again he is nicely sculpted and cast but I had to paint him twice as I was not happy the first time. I think I tried too hard the first attempt to make it look like a "Real" wolf. Once I accepted it as a fantasy figure and stopped looking at pictures of real wolves it pretty much painted itself. Other than the skin tones it is just a simple dry brush. I used 4 different greys and worked quickly so that they would all blend on the model. It's no where near perfect but as a fantasy figure I think it works well enough. I won't dwell on what I don't like or have done wrong as I am happy with it and would be prepared to paint another one. That's one of the tests for me, if I would be prepared to paint another. So no more whining about it and as you can see in the close up picture the skin tones and claws have come out well and I am very pleased with the orange eyes.

That's todays post. More again on Tuesday. Thanks for reading I hope it's warm and sunny where you are and that you have a great couple of days. All the best Clint
