A mixed bag

yes a real mix of projects today. Yet one thing they do have in common is the photography is terrible. Not making excuses it is just one of those things where nothing has worked!  Oh well.


So starting with some air support for my Japanese in 15mm. This is an Academy 1/144th scale Japanese Zero. The model was just a couple of pounds on eBay. It was easy to put together. But not all that easy to paint. The actual colours went on OK no problem there. The problem comes when trying to get the right colour green. Let me explain. Aircraft modellers will tell you tat the correct Japanese green for Aircraft is a bit of a mystery. Because the colour faded so fast when applied there is no definite answer to what the "Proper colour" should be. Indeed white may be as authentic as green as the colour faded and bleached in the tropical heat. Yes you do see some Navy planes painted white, but army planes as far as I am aware should be green. So this may well be the wrong colour green. But I will not be getting a Munsel diagram out to find out. It is close enough for me in a game where it only appears occasionally

Then we have some 10mm Spanish Civil war regular army light machine guns. I will be also doing some militia LMGs as well but this gets them finished for the regular ARMY. So that is one side finished for Bayonet and Ideology. Although you can hardly see them the figures are Pendraken and in army uniforms. Green clothing but with grey helmets.

Finally here is a single Pic of my first figure from "the Walking Dead"  game finished. A single walker.  the figures are very nice and I will be doing more as soon as time permits. The figures are hard plastic and paint very well. Each of the Walkers is different so the first thing you need to do is work out how long they have been dead and paint the skin appropriately. Therefore I will be painting a variety of skin tones to represent those killed very recently and those killed during the out break.

White Russian Cossacks (15mm)

Yes more painted figures for Matt as part of his ever growing Russian Civil war collection.  The figures are all 15mm and from Peter Pig. One was slightly damaged on arrival to me, so a very slight repair was carried out. And now it is hardly noticeable and not noticeable at all unless you are actually looking for it!

16 figures in all and while they should have grey and even black lambs wool on the head gear IN ADDITION to the white shown only a true rivet counter would really care about such a thing and having checked with Matt he is happy with the all white sheepskin hats. Again If we were really being picky they should also have white crosses inside the red of their hats but at this scale they would not actually bee seen. So I have left them out.  it would be like adding eyes to 15mm figures. I am sure some painters do but in all honesty I do not!

I am back on 28mm figures for a while, both historical and walkers. Starting them all today. So with luck they should be seen by the end of the week.

The last of my....

"I am not going to Salute!" spending.  Firstly a small order from Pendraken Miniatures  (LINK ) Just some more Spanish Civil war stuff. And so far the only thing I have finished painting is shown to the right. It is quite the ugliest vehicle I have ever painted. Which is not to say it was not well cast but is to say the design of this type of Republican armoured truck is like a sink on wheels. In fact I have called it in my head either the sink or Bathtub of doom! As vehicle designs go it is not all that inspiring.

Just to show you how bad it is here is one more shot.  In the game (Bayonet and Ideology) it comes in pairs and can only more 1 space per turn while off road...On road it can motor! Needless to say these were not built in factories in the Spanish civil war but garages. I have not put it in any particular colour scheme or with slogans as I want it to be used by militias of each side.

Other than the sink of doom I mostly purchased light machine guns as I had none and in the rules I plan to use there can be 1 per platoon . Which is far less than you would usually get in a WW2 game. But that is the Spanish civil war for you.

The other Purchase is The Walking Dead (all out war).. Yes I like zombie games and saw a few play throughs on uTube  before spending any money. I plan to build a battle board and terrain, but that will be on another blog. (28 Dice Later) I may even intend to platy a few games, but that is for the future and not yet. There is nothing As yet on that blog.

That is it for today I am just waiting for paint to dry on some Russian Civil war Cossacks as I type this. So they should (fingers crossed be finished this afternoon.

2nd Platoon (WW2 Japanese15mm)

Well I have just finished the 2nd Platoon for my PBI Pacific war.  So strongly working towards a full supported company. Like the last Platoon this platoon consists of 10 stands (I added more to the last
platoon....not as yet seen). These 10 stands are:

• 1 Command Stand (pistol Armed)
• 2 Light Machine Gun stands
• 2 Light Mortar stands
• 5 Rifle stands.

Yes I do intend to make a 3rd platoon. And Yes I still have some figures left to paint so each of these platoons MAY well get expanded. But for now that is the platoon

To the right is the full company (so far). From left to right:

• 2 70mm Infantry guns (I may get 2 more)
• Mortar section consisting of a command stand and 2 Mortars. Again this can/will be expanded.
• 1st Platoon, Using the same composition as that listed above.
• Command section consisting of 2 snipers and company command (with battle flag!)
• 2nd Platoon. Exactly as shown above.

At the back is the destroyed tankette objective marker.

The next stage is to get the third platoon ready and then PERHAPS get some more support. This support could be mortars, Machineguns, Tankettes or Tanks. I am not sure just yet.

Thanks for looking and now back to reality. I am expecting some more shinies to arrive today as my LAST I am not going to Salute self Pressie. Nothing so very exciting that you need to know in advance but some more 10mm Spanish Civil War stuf and some more Rssian Civil war stuff is ALREADY on the painting table.

CV33 (or L3)

Yes the tankette has more than one name.  It is the Italian tankette, a 2 man armoured vehicle armed with twin machine guns. Some were flame thrower equipped but they were quite rare from what I am lead to believe.

The model is by Frontline (LINK) wargaming and cast in Resin. The hull and the tracks are cast separately so some supergluing is required. But not much!

While it was used in the Spanish Civil war this is for my Western Desert Chain of Command forces. Which will be expanded on this year. (Crosses fingers and hopes not to get side tracked).

Again the reason for Chain of Command is the reliance on infantry and not heavy armour. You are more likely to be able to field an armoured car than a tank for example.

The bottom picture is clearly a real one and not a model, and is included for those that are not familiar with the vehicle.

Company command (ww2 Japanese)

As I know most will have gone to Salute and will do some very good blogs post about the show. I am simply showing my latest 15mm WW2 Japanese. A single stand of Battlefront representing Company command.

I settled on the army flag as opposed to the marine (Navy) flag for 2 reasons. 1, it is easier to paint. 2. it was a lot more common and allows these troops to function in Burma, Singapore, Malaysia etc. as well as the Islands of the Pacific.

So just 2 figures in 15mm, but another finished stand and dare I say from the game point of view a rather important one.

White Russian Tanks 15mm

Just finished some tanks for the Russian Civil war. They are all 15mm and by Peter Pig.  We have 2 MK IV British tanks and 4 FT 17 French light tanks.

 During the Russian Civil war Britain supplied a very few tanks to support the Tsar. As you can see they have the Russian Flag on the front of the running gear housing. Sometimes the flag is shown vertical at other times horizontal so quite simply I have painted one of each. Being totally honest I painted them both horizontal to begin with and then Matt suggested one of each so 20 mins later they were re painted. No fuss no bother.  He is a good mate so happy to help out.
Maybe not if he asked me to bury a body but to repaint the front of a small model tank. Sure no worries!

Apologise for the photography it was early in the morning.  As you can see from the top picture they are some-what larger than the French Light tanks.  In the Square bashing rules by Peter Pig they count as heavy tanks and you can see why.  Heavy tanks in the rules are only good in assaults which does make them quite limiting to use. but great fun none the less.






And the "Light Tanks" again 15mm by Peter Pig. They come in 2 varieties. either round or hexagonal turret and also in 2 armaments. Either a 37mm cannon or a machine gun. So a possible 4 varieties if you want to try all the combinations. 2 tanks have hand painted roundels and 2 do not.  While they are not perfectly clear in the photos they are painted with a steady hand and look OK in real life.

I  did find all these tanks tricky to paint, not due to strange camouflage but because perhaps they were all new to me and I was not at all sure what I was doing.

Anyway next for Matt I am painting some Cossack cavalry for the Russian Civil war while in the mean time I paint some more WW2 Japanese for my self.

2 Little Indians

Yes 2 28mm "Redoubt" woodland Indians.

While I do not think the sculpts are the very best I do appreciate the prices. They work out at £1.40 per figure and at that price who can possibly complain. I still have a few left to paint so when it gets quiet I will paint some more.

Both carry daggers in addition to their main weapons so they look like they know what they are doing, even if I am in charge and the reality is that they have no idea!

I do struggle when painting "Warpaint" as I just cannot imagine it properly. I am however keeping to just 4 colours (Red, white, black and ochre) as I believe they would be the correct colours but I have NO evidence for that.

As mentioned I do have more of these to do and I will be getting some more as well as it turns out I have none with bow and arrow. And that just seems wrong!

That's it for now more in a day or two.

I am undecided what to put on next, an AAR or some more figures. If you have a SATRONG preference mention your choice in the comments.

1st Platoon. (Japanese PBI)

Well as you can see I have now finished my 1st Platoon of Infantry for PBI pacific. The Platoon consists of Junior officer (with White tab at the back) 2 LMG stands, 1 light mortar (Knee Mortar) stand and 5 Rifle stands.

I hasten to say this is nearly as small as an infantry platoon can be in the Japanese Army list. SO expect more stands to be added.  In fact I am already on the next 2 stands as I type this. I hope to show some more stands by the end of the week. (Fingers Crossed)

As I am not going to Salute I have placed another order which is now marked as dispatched so shinnies are coming this week.

That is just a quick one for today. Now back to the Paint table!

A BIG thank you.

I want to say Thank you to Edwin. During the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge ( Link )I won a prize. Now I do not normally win anything so I was very excited to have won a prize.  The prize was with ( LINK ) Diplomatist Books.

I did a very brief email exchange with Edwin and he posted everything I wanted the day after. Now being Dyslexic I am in no way the fastest/best reader. (I was tested and found to have a reading speed of a 12 year old... and yet the comprehension of a post graduate. Yeah go figure! So I selected 2 books that I knew would have some pictures and that from experience I thought I would manage. Yeah boo hoo me! Ahh poor baby!)


So two Osprey books in the raid series. The first selected was a WW2 title about a raid on a Japanese prisoner of war camp. This I knew would be just my cup of tea.

The second book was set just after the Vietnam war about the rescue of the crew of a US cargo ship in the same area of the world. Again something I knew I would be interested in and thought I would enjoy.

So far I have only skimmed through each book looking at the pictures and examining any maps but I am confident that I shall enjoy them both.

But we are not yet finished Edwin Included a third book free of charge which is in the same series and while not something I would have selected looks like it may end up being the best of the three. It is the 1804 raid on Barbary Pirates to release Christian prisoners. Again something I know nothing about, but I can already see a game developing from this stand point.

Again I have skimmed but not read. While these are classed as second-hand I am told (by Edwin) that they were old stock from shops that have now ceased trading. So they are as new in condition and by far in better condition than I expected.

Japanese Sniper Assets (PBI)

Well I have finished my first assets.  In PBI snipers are Assets and the Japanese you will not be surprised have the opportunity to get more than 1 sniper. So for now I have made 2. I will need to increase this number and may eve go as high as 4. For now 2 is enough.

So today is 2 sniper stands for ww2 Japanese army (Or  Marine). Only 4 figures but I hope to have the first platoon finished by the weekend.

The chance to get 1 or 2 or even 3 Japanese snipers in PBI is quite high. It depends on rolling well and being brave.  The Japanese in Pacific Island wars have a dice pool of 15 for a sniper.  You may select as many dice up to that score but the score or pool of dice is diminished each turn by the number you select. If any of the dice roll a "6" then the sniper would turn up for the rest of the game.  So with 15 dice in the pool it is VERY likely that at least 1 sniper will arrive.

The figures are by Battlefront and are 15mm in size.

Two more, but Oh my!

Yes 2 more figures finished. I cannot say I am happy with the lady and I might re-paint the face. Her clothes are OK but the face is a shocker.

The man though is Ok am quite happy with him. Again No idea who makes these figures they are just 2 random figures  that were laying about and needing a coat (or 2) of paint.

Both 28mm and I think different makes but I do not know.

I do have a few more stands of Japanese finished for next time. But I thought these two might just break up the Pacific flavour and scale.
