Even more Burpas

Yes only 4 more Burpa cavalry. But at the end a group shot of this BATCH, which is all the Burpas I have painted since xmas.

As with the rest they are all either Foundry or Empress Miniatures and all 28mm and with luck they should all work together.

The one on the far right is some kind of leader and the background makes him appear darker than he really is. The 2 in the middle shall carry flags or banner. However Matt knows I do not enjoy doing these so he will kindly do them for me. The one on the left is not special in any way  in that he is rank and file and not leader or standard bearer.
Lastly a group pic of all the ones done SINCE Christmas.

Thanks for looking and more again soon. Just give me a few days. Perhaps Tuesday.

All the best on a 5am Sunday morning.

Warg Rider.

Yes another LotR figure rolls (or should that be gallops) of my painting table. To be honest I do not have VERY many more to do.

The figure is a Games Workshop Warg rider. . It is a 28mm figure, and was an eBay purchase. Following "Fantorical" blogs posts about Songs of blade and heroes Lord of the rings posts. So feel free to blame or praise him for the inspiration   (Link to BLOG). I do have a couple more to do so you have not seen the last of the Lord of the Rings figures just yet.

The shadows are present on the pics due to the dullness of the weather so kindly forgive that unless you are powerful enough to change the local weather here, in which case I would ask you to do that instead.

Consider this a short interlude as I carry on with more Burpas. Which I hope to show next time.

So until next time, take care have fun and paint like crazy.

All the best Clint

Mounted Musician Burpa 28mm

Yep just 1 figure today. The weather here has been dull and overcast. so much that it has been a "Challenging "time to paint. As such just a single figure finished.

It is of course a Burpa Musician for Matt. As such it is a 28mm figure painted and based to fit in with the rest of his troops. I strongly suggest he carries a trumpet/horn of some variety. I am not up on the technical terms so I will leave it at that.

If the weather had been favourable it would have been nicer to paint. I am not complaining but let us just say it has been a struggle to paint at all recently.

There are 4 more mounted troops on the paint table and I hope to finish them by Sunday. But It may well take longer.

I suspect a LotR figure will be the next thing finished, but that does depend on how things progress.

Elsewhere in the Projects:

Kevin from the club gave me these. 2 "Golden Compass" airships.
The idea being that they could with a repaint and on suitable stands be used for "Crimson Skies" Time will tell.
But none the less a big thank you to Kev. Really appreciate it.

|Additionally a quick chat (is that a chattette?) with Tim reveals that his WW1 10 mm armies are very nearly finished. The Turkish is finished and the Imperial will not take long. This being the case I have put my WW1 project on the back burner. I will see how his turns out and then decide how, if at all to progress. Maybe I will turn into Arab Revolt... who knows.

That's it for today. I really do need to get my DIY head on and patch the wall left in the kitchen by the gas fitter.... GRRRR!

BoB first game.

The Archaeologists are just to the right.
One of the things I like in games is not knowing what the other player is supposed to do. In other words hidden objectives. In reality no battle is won if both players know ALL the facts. It is enough to know what your objective is and IF you can deduce the opponents objective things SHOULD go easier. But there should be an air of Mystery at least at the start. So when I set up the "Back of Beyond " game I was expecting 4 players .But only had 2! Rather than being a hindrance I tried to look on it as an advantage. Thus Graham played the Russians (they could be white or red Russians depending on what he wanted, ) While Matt played the Indians.

Rolls Royce armoured car arrives for Matt.
From grahams point of view: The Indians had invaded his area and needed to be sent back across the border with their tails between their legs, the Dogs!

From Matt's point of View: the Esteemed Archaeologist had found something vital to the crown while travelling in the BoB and needed to bring it back to British control.

A HMG and a lorry load of infantry reinforces Graham
It is worth mentioning that all vehicles could ONLY
move on the road or get bogged down in sof sand.
The Rules were "Triumph and Tragedy" set some where north of India in the late 1920's. Matt had the only hero "Henry Simons-Parker" an archaeologist who will no doubt turn up in further adventures . As in the rules Heroes do not die unless the GM (me decrees it so! I did not decree it so! (That's not a spoiler as he could still be captured or wounded or anything else I could think of if he did actually die in the game.

Each side started with 2 units on the table. Two of Grahams choice but Matt only had 1 choice, the other being the rabble of diggers that seem to accompany archaeologists everywhere. The diggers were the worst troops in the entire game. with the hero being (by far) the best.

The first few turns saw matt leave the dig site and head to the large compound where he had some Punjabi troops waiting in cover. Graham was fortunate enough to bring on a HMG from reserves and move up into better positions with the rest of his troops.

Despite telling ALL players that vehicles had paper thin armour and could be destroyed by normal small arms fire Matt bought on a Rolls Royce armoured car and as it drove up the road spraying bullets from its HMG. Graham in a lucky shot was able to destroy the HMG and kill the gunner with his very first shot! Thangs were not going Matts way.  The armoured car was targeted several more times and eventually lost a tire and the vehicle commander so by the end of the game it was just a bullet magnet and mobile baracade or at least that is how Matt used it. But in reality without a commander or a gun and with only 3 properly functioning wheels what other choices did he have.

Player who had never played before
quickly picked up the rules
despite my mistakes.
(Which were mostly rectified)
matt did bring on another Punjabi squad. these on paper were better troops than Graham had. but Graham had the dice gods on hid side and the noose tightened around he Archaeologist . having set his troops to advantageous positions in the first few turn from then on the HMG and 2 squads were able to bring a consistent and withering fire on Matts figures. Both sides learnt the use of cover in the rules very quickly and while both did play well. The loss of the armoured car was a telling blow to Matt.

Matt separated Henry Simons-Parker from the unit and kept the unit closer to Graham thus providing a meat shield of protection. As Graham had to target the unit as opposed to the individual.

None the less there was only one avenue of escape left to Matt (if escape was the plan.). Matts Punjabi troops left the compound and took to the road. using as much cover as they could. Which was actually mud brick walling, and wheat fields (hard and soft cover)

Graham was having the best of the shooting but not by much. Grahams troops tended to want to shoot at the Rolls Royce even when Graham would rather they shot at more fleshy targets. However Mastt was able to get a little relief and forced one of Grahams units to run out of sight and "Recover". Matts Tactic with his slightly superior troops were to take the recovery option in view of the enemy and risk routing from the table. Luckily  for matt he was always able to make the morale test and his officers were able to steady the troops nerves.

In the final turn Matt escaped most of his troops
Towards the end of the Game Graham bought on the artillery . This was a Secret mission for him . It was considered by high command to valuable to loose  or even fire and it was just included in the game to scare Matt. It had no other in game purpose. But Matt never knew this. The idea being if more players only the controlling player would know it was not able to fire and a minor argument among allies might result when it was not used to "save" the Day, the game or his troops! In reality its only purpose was to give the Indians another target. Graham being sensible never allowed it to be targeted, and as all of his side (just him in this instance) knew it was just a distraction a lot of the sub plot was missed.

Conclusion: \Matt was able to escape with most of the diggers and Henery Simons-Parker. Some of the diggers no doubt would die of their woulds and other end up in erhm.. "detention". Having been casualties. Most were un harmed. Like wise many of the Punjabi's did not make it back across the border either captured or dead in battle.

The rules worked quite well and I anticipate another game. I will of course need a further read of them and a minor study of them. Overall I was very happy with the game and how the rules worked.

Graham lost less troops and was awarded a minor victory. A major victory if Simons-Parker was stopped but as he made it across the border and later went on to publish his results in the Royal Institute papers. being of a military mind you paid the results of the dig little heed but you did glean something about the Ice age animals not dying out as far in the past as previously though... All a load of pseudo-scientific hog wash of course, now where is that waiter with the brandy?

Yet another 5 more Burpas

Well the title says it all. I believe they are a mixture of makes including Foundry and Empress miniatures. (But just don't ask me who is who!)

3 Have been left without flags on the poles as I have asked Matt to do them from now on. I was getting in a frightful mess with them.

Clearly there are 2 Officers/tribal leaders and 3 flag wavers. As they would all be men of note at least as far as the tribe is concerened I have tended to go for some bright colours, Including a dark blue as I so rarely paint the Burpas in dark blue. He should stand out nicely.

needless to say they are 28mm tall and should fit in with the rest of Matts troops. We have been lucky enough to have a game in early December, but being a numbskull I forgot my camera. Despite this I will do a game report soon as 2 other club members have sent me some Pics.

That is it for today. 5 Cavalry to do for Matt and they are now undercoated so should get started tonight. Only base horse colours but It is a start!

Until next time take care, have fun and paint if you get the opportunity!

Kind regards Clint

Plans! (2018)

My plans are as always very fluid. However here are some thoughts for the new year. I will of course continue to paint for Matt (and other club members if they pay me). But that is not really a plan of mine for the new year.

Bellow are the things I want to achieve for myself I will try to only show the basic plans and hope this time next year I can cross them off. (I usually can't).

1] I shall continue with the BoB (Back of Beyond) Project in 20mm. This will definitely happen as I feel enthused by the whole game ethos.

2] Crimson Skies: While still reading the rules I see this as a club game that may actually take off. I still need to read all the rules but so far so good. It should make a very suitable game for the club and I am at present contemplating making some sky boards even maybe a zeppelin! Remember you heard it here first.

3] WW1 Historical. For this I really need to do a few things first. The easiest being talk to Tim at the club. When that is done I need to sell all my colonial figures (to raise funds and make space.) Tim has an UNPAINTED Turkish army and an UNPAINTED Imperial (British) army. So I will need to see what he says on Sunday and maybe start an army within 2 months of that. As well as Galipoli and Lawence of Arabia there are many other battles that did take place and it makes such a change from Western Front.

4] Dieselpunk. As I had the "Gaslands" Rules (osprey) for Crimbo I find I like the ules but dislike the setting and scale and therefore changes NEED to be made. As such I intend to make a scale change to 28mm. Easy done just enlarge the templates. I also want to take it back to a 1930's setting. Yes this will be loads of work to get the cars right.... in that they will need to be converted. But just imagine how spectacular it will look. Assuming I can get it finished. I know this is by far the biggest plan and fraught with difficulties but if it works it will be great.

In addition I will continue to work on my dark age aries (yes I have 2 started, one in 28mm and one in 15mmm) > These are not a priority at present so do not expect huge leaps to be made in them. I also have some Lord of the Rings figures to paint and hope to do one every 2 weeks.

Lastly I expect TO GET SIDE TRACKED. This is almost inevitable so do not hold it against me. Hope fully something will grab you as well. If so please feel free to leave a comment.

All the best Clint

And little can be done until a chat at the club but at least these are my plans.

5 Burpas more

Yes there  are always more Burpas. Mat says he has about 2 more boxes. As I do not know how many is in a box that does not help.....Oh well.

Anyway here is another 5. I suspect they are all "Foundry" but if you know better I am happy to be enlightened. All I do know is the next 5 are ready for undercoat. And I will be starting them tonight.

Flags will be added (BY MATT) to 2 of these figures so you will not see them finished until we have the next game using them.

Not sure what will come next it all depends on how warm my painting room will be. Might be more 28mm Burpas of GW LotR. I will have both undercoated by tonight so it all depends what I can crack on with.

Until then take care have fun and just promise me "NO FROSTBITE!"

All the best Clint

Tweak! 28mm

"Why has Tweak only got one ear?" The  young voice said.
"Because I dropped him on the concrete and it broke off and shattered!"
Came the reply.
"Oh" was the only answer and the mystery of the one eared Tweak was explained.

Yes I did drop it on the concrete and it did shatter. Which IS a shame, but it did reach me from Dave (wargamesterrainworkshop.co.uk/) at WTWin a fine condition and NO blame in any way attaches itself to him because of my clumsiness.
The Character of "Tweak" should be clear to ant of a certain age who read 200ad comics. If you did not read 2000ad I can't help you but I can sympathise and suggest you had a deprived childhood!

Here is a comic book version. He appeared along with Judge Dredd and as a character Tweak  was not particularly enjoyed by me. But it was a free figure and as such was painted with much gratitude. I realise some people would have thought Tweak was the best thing since sliced bread and I mean to take nothing away from that view. Just saying to me he was a distraction and to me did not add very much to the JD storyline.

I suspect the figure was sculpted by Dave. (Thanks Dave) And It is a fine figure. As you can see I have stuck to the same colours as the comic and the figure does sit well with my other JD figures. However as I do not play Judge Dredd very much he is not likely to have very much table time.

Sorry the pics are so dark, It's winter and a flash will only do so much. Most importantly it is another figure done and one I will not (I think) be doing again.

I hope to post again in a few days but that does depend on how real life is in the mean time. So far it is being good to me.

Until then, take care, have fun and try to find something decent on TV (I can't|)

All I want for Krimbo is......?

Well I must say I am very pleased with the gifts I received this year.
And here they are.

Firstly my mother is very nearly back to normal and this is the best gift.

As she was poorly she could not get any gifts so I treated myself. I bought the new Osprey rules "Gaslands" which I must say are rather quite good. While designed for a specific scale and setting there is a paragraph in the rules For changing the scale or the setting, so I think I will be edging towards Dieselpunk games.

I was also VERY lucky and managed to snag (on eBay) a mint version of Crimson Skies. It really does not look like it has ever been played with so I am just going to have to play it like crazy! I have about 20 "Wizkid" planes and will be working on getting this game as fully 3d as possible. Maybe not straight away, but soon my precious soon!  More Dieselpunk!

My sister got me the DVD of Rocketeer so that will add to the dieselpunk vibe very nicely. It is what I asked for and I am grateful.

Lastly from Matt and completely unexpected I got some German Aeronef ships. These are Brigade Models and they are helping to lift my spirits immensely. Totally unexpected and again I am very grateful for them. Cheers Mate.

Not (so far) a bad Krimbo at all. Yes I did buy everything in the top 2 pics myself, but I got exactly what I wanted and am smiling like a Cheshire cat!

Another post (Assuming I get anything finished) in 2 days

Until then take care have fun and paint if the mood takles you.

Best Wishes and seasons Greetings Clint

2 things, Maybe 3)

Firstly here are he remainder of the BoB Punjabi Indians that I have purchased. As with the others they are IT Miniatures and 1/72nd scale. Or 20mm if you want it in wargames speak. (here is a link)

8 in this batch making 24 in total. Which should give me a platoon strength os as close to it as I am likely to get. Only 3 different posses this time, but when mixed in with the others no one will notice.  No Officers as at least 1 platoon should be NCO led. Just to make it realistic!

I hope to do a group shot of the whole force sometime soon.

As for what is next there are several things on the painting table so It could be nearly anything. (sci fi , Fantasy or Historical)

Secondly and mostly for a laugh here is my last Radish dug up this year. I call it Franken-Radish. It is real, it is editable and I dug it up on Friday Morning!

The figure being a 20mm tall miniature is just for scale. I have not been terribly successful with Radish this year. They taste fine but look damn ugly!

It grew in 2 bursts hence the strange shape. And this is one of the ones that does not look RUDE! Most of the rest did look rude. But they taste OK and that is the main thing.

I still have Carrots Beet root and Cabbage to dig up! I have no idea what they will turn out like! My first time with all three of those.

Lastly Have a great Crimbo and I will post again soon. I KNOW I will be getting 2 things for the passing of Christmas (I know because I bought them). So In a few days I will do a loot post.

Until then, take care have fun pull a cracker, graon at a bad joke and do your best not to eat and drink too much

Cheers Clint

Machine gun BoB 20mm

Not a lt actually finished hobby wise. But he oven and fire are now finished so I no longer have the excuse "I am too cold!"

Anyway back to the hobby stuff. Just a single IT Miniatures (LINK)Russian Civil war machine gun.  5 parts in total (3 crew and 2 parts to the gun). It is in the White Russian section on the web site but seriously I can be used be either side as the uniforms hardly changed and the actual gun did not change at all.

I do have another version of the gun but that is the gun in transit and while I shall do it soon it is nothing I have to finish immediately.

The figures are 20mm and are totally suitable for anywhere in the Back of beyond setting with regard to georraphy or almost time scale (unless doing frightfully early!

I hope to do one more post before Crimbo (you have been warned) and again that will be Back of Beyond (assuming I get them finished or near finished tonight.

It is worth mentioning that this is the shortest day of the year so I may not get anything finished. I may just get sozzeled instead!

Gaslands Pick-up

Well it is 5am and I am having trouble sleeping, so it must be blogging time. Today is another car for "Gaslands" this time a Pick-up truck. Purchased new from Wilkos for £1 or a very little less.

Conversion wise I just added "Microstrip" which is thin machine cut plasticard to keep it all the same thickness. I did try to add it just about on all surfaces to help break up the factory finish, One thing I did not do was add a load to the flatbed.

I could so easily have done and indeed may do in the future but for now I craved the openness and carrying capacity. IF I do add a load I will go for loads that can also be removed as this will offer the greatest Possible variety. You never know we might have one game where a specific cargo... like fuel drums is required. So by keeping as many options as possible I hope to make it as versatile as possible.

It is a little more weathered than the last I make no excuses just to say I was heavy handed. The colours I have kept the same. It is not that I think in a post apocalypse only certain colours will be availiable but more that I know what players are like and they can more easily identify simple block colours. Imaging Keith saying "I have the Blue cars" it is just easier for all concerned.

The last pick shows them both together. It should make an easy cheap force for a game when I do indeed start making the blue ones. NO the red ones do not nessercarily go faster. Some one will ask if I did not say either at club level or on here.

That's it for today. With luck I get some house renovation done.... been without a stove or heating for 4 days. Living on Soup, take a ways and hot water bottles (but not eating the lkast ones!

But Oven was delivered last night so things may be looking up!
