20mm Type 98. (15mm scale Japanese WW2). Anti Aircraft guns

Now I must admit I have had a bit of a splurge in the last few weeks. Picked these up on eBay for £3.30 instead of the shop price of £8.10. So I think a bargain. But only a bargain if it is something you want. Luckily I do but I now many wargames do not.

In the game it has no HE capability but the Anti Tank rating of 5. (Which is the one lower than the 70mm Infantry gun. and 1 higher than the Japanese Anti-tank Rifle). And with more chance to rapid fire and effect infantry.

To the right is what it actually looks like in real life. I will not go into technical details but it is light enough to go anywhere the 70mm Infantry gun can go in the jungle. So it was quite versatile and while mostly used to defend islands and airports could easily be transported and used almost anywhere.

Bloody flash did not go off!!

Not the most dangerous of support weapons perfectly good enough for me and my WW2 Japanese 15mm forces. For the money I received enough crew and additional troops who would accompany the AA gun in order to bring up ammunition. This has meant an additional Rifle armed Infantry stand added to the 3rd Platoon (seen a few posts ago). Where with most companies I would either pay more or not get the crew so doubly a bargain I say.

As a small target and no gun shield I am not expecting these to survive overly long in any game but they are cheap points wise (14 points with an average crew) so will not make a huge dent in any force size.

8 More Cavalry

Yes Matt has 8 more cavalry. Yes the pic shows 9, one was one I had painted previously and Matt wanted these all to fit in with duller colours and more muted hues. I think I have achieved that.

There is a flag to add, but Matt will be adding the flags from now on as he KNOWS it is a task I detest. I am sure I could do it with practice but to be honest I do not enjoy that part of painting in the least so he can do it from now on.

Additionally Matt has yet to see these figures, I normally give him a sneak peek prior to posting on the blog. But as Matt is out of the office and on holiday (I hope somewhere nice.. let us be honest if it was not nice why did he choose to go there!!?)

I have placed the older figure among the group and I for one cannot tell it apart so don't ask me. The figures are all 28mm EITHER Perry or Foundry miniatures. (I think Perry as the horses seem more refined but I could easily be wrong)>

 Another post on Saturday. The figures are already painted and ready to photograph but no time today. (As well as being in a different scale and part of the world so they would not fit in with this post)>

3rd Platoon

These are 15mm Battlefront ww2 Japanese. Painted and based or 3omm squares for PBI the ww2 company level game by Peter Pig. ( http://www.peterpig.co.uk/ ). It was cheaper to buy a Battlefront company pack than to try to buy individual packs from any other source. Trust me It is something I looked at! So getting a deal at a show (Cavalier) in February I have slowly completed the company.

The wounded markers are Peter Pig and while no one wants dead/wounded markers for their own troops they are vital for the game.

leaders have a 10mm strip at the rear of the stand to clearly Identify them (and name them if you choose). As yet I have not named them and am not sure I will.

The reeds are bristles from a Wilkinson's Wall paper brush. which I bought a few years back for the pricely sum of 99p and as it has just about been used up I fear I will need to buy another and I suspect the price will have changed.

I have shown the WHOLE company as I know several of you like to see complete "armies" all in one place. Ahh but is it complete? That answer is NO of course not, there are still things to add to round out all the options.

Lurking in the background are a few more additions. But for today I am only looking at the 3rd Platoon. It is comprised as follows.

• Platoon Commander
• 2 "Knee" Mortars
• 2 LMG stands
• 6 Rifle Stands

Much like previous platoons. This was the most efficient use of the figures and I was able to get the Whole Company out of one box with no extras. I cannot guarantee that every one will be able to, but it did work for me in this instance. And Yes I did manage a few more stands than those shown... just one or three and they are currently in Paint!

I still have a few things waiting in the wings to get painted but I have at least reached a critical mass with which to face my US troops at a Pacific Island  from now on.

Have you stoped poking the Deepones yet?

Okay my final deepone is now finished.  So Just a quick post, mostly due to the fact I have found I get les page views on the weekend.

As you can see this was painted to match the rest of the Deepones. There was a delay as I just did not have the right base for it. Now I freely admit this was my choice and nothing but my choice. A base was supplied by Black Cat ( LINK to Shop ) and it did fit with the other bases they supplied HOWEVER I decided on an MDF base for this figure and had to wait for it to arrive.

As it has now arrived I promptly finished the Deep one off. By that I mean painted it and not fed it poison, you get the idea.  So Now I have all 5 painted and ready for In Her Majesties name.... or at least I will have when I get some hybrids. (And I suspect that will be soon).

being as this one crawls the base is somewhat bigger than the others, which is no problem to me and most likely not to you either. I went for a VERY simple base to represent either beach or possible river bank or in extreme cases sea bed.  Just a quick dry brush with a lighter sand colour and a couple of tufts was all it needed.






 I was also able to finish a Vulture. This is by EMP Miniatures ( Shop Link ) and you can see it is on their front page and also Stocked by Col Bill (Col Bill Shop Link)) so easy to pick up at shows.

This is for Matt when he collects his latest batch of figures. Again there was an issue and I had to supply my own base and AGAIN it is my choice to do so. The model does come with 2 metal pins cast on the figure so is easy to attach to fences, poles, dead bodies etc.. But I did not have any at this time suitable so I wanted it free standing. Therefore I put it on a flying base.  Matt knows nothing about this so unless he tunes it it will e a surprise. Ahh but if you cannot give a little gift to a friend the world is a sad place.

I am not 100% sure the colours are exactly right as I was working more from Walt Disney (jungle book) that real life. But let's be honest who really cares. There are after all 22 Speicesof Vulture on this planet so the chances are it will be close enough to one of the types. And if not I will concede a wildlife expert follows my blog and that is even better than being right.

next post on Tuesday and VERY likely to be WW2 15mm PBI Japanese.. It is no good I can already hear you yawning but that is what it will most likely be despite that.

The Missing Pics

Last week I reported missing some pics of the stuff  I had been painting. Well I found them. By which I mean the camera found them. They did not appear one day but were there a few days later. And here they are.

They are all for Matt and part of his ever growing Sudan Collection. They are all also Egyptian, Matt knows I like painting them. And I think they are all old glory figures in 28mm.

Most are spare artillery crew figures along with 1 Nordenfelt Machine gun (Link to Wiki ). Clearly 4 of the figures, those in blue are officers, not just because they are pointing!

These to me are now "Old news" as they have already been returned to Matt and mighty pleased he was too.

Elsewhere on the painting table at least for now I have some Mahdist Cavalry (as well as 3 Madist foot) so expect them next week or maybe if you are unlucky for the next few weeks.


 Of my own projects I have my last Deepone. He (or maybe it is a she... I cannot tell) was delayed because I could not find a suitable base. Now however a base has been found and I can crack on as fast as I like.

A Zombie... From the walking dead game nearly finished now and should be OK to show next week.

A platoon of 15mm WW2 Japanese finished at last. Purchased in February and now just about ready for a game or two. I will admit Vampifan reignited this project by giving me enough funds to buy the Type I Ho-Ro Tank destroyers. I will admit they put me into a buying frenzy for the project and I am now just about ready.. or I will be when I start painting up some armour, Well Tankettes at least.

I shall do a post about this project probably on Sunday. With everything painted so far. But I still have some stragglers on the painting table as well. But I hope to finish them over the weekend. Fingers crossed.

Well that tells you what is coming up. I must say I am looking forward to the Japanese as I have in the past played VERY little Pacific and far east Games.

Of the two I am hoping for more Pacific Japanese Vs American games, but I know Graham (at the club) wants more Far East games.

Finally there are 5 Napoleonic French on the table as well. Almost forgot those.

DEEPONES, Kermit's revenge... or an idea for IHMN

Well the title pretty much says it all. I have some (at least for me) good news. The Egyptians I had painted for Matt photo's have been found. More of that another time. I  guess my sacrifices to the Outer/older gods must have worked.

These figures are by BLACK CAT BASES ( LINK ) and are figures I received as part of my prize from Vampifan. They were a random lot of DeepOnes 5 random models at a bargain price (I WILL be getting more). 1 is still to be painted as I try to get just the right base for him so be patient he will be coming along soon, (Soon in geological terms... maybe not soon in a 5 year olds terms). But in the mean time kindly enjoy the others. I REALLY did.

These were a QUICK paint mostly just base colours and a wash and a top coat. that said I am very happy with how they came out. Nothing flashy and something we can all do  easily. (But don't tell any non painters that last bit... they will not understand.

I did paint the inside of the legs a cream as well and then thought about it and painted over with the base colour green when dry. Sometimes we all need to rethink tings as we paint.

I painted the eyes red as I looked up frog eyes on google and found them in many many colours so selected Red as it just seemed to fit best. I am not sure yet what colour I will paint any Hybrids. !!??

I want to use these to fight Royal  Navy landing party In Her Majesties Name (IHMN) as I can easily  see te deep ones turning up just about anywhere... (Maybe not Arizona but then I will use Sepant People!). Also as they have no ranged weapons some Hybrids will have to supplement them and maybe some big nasty tentacle thing as well.... which I just happen to have in the painting queue! Not sure of the Stats just yet. But at least you know my thinking... yes crazy as a box of frogs!

Bengal lancers again

I handed back a load of figures to Matt yesterday and the photos just have not come out. So whining aside here are some more Bengal Lancers.

6 in all and he tells me this is them all painted now. (until he either buys some more or finds some hidden away.). The models are either Perry or Foundry, he did tell me but the memory is not what it was.


The horses legs were very bendy as were the lances but other than that they were no problem to assemble. The problem is on the other side so you cannot see it. But trust me it is there.

Not my favourite things to paint nor actually my least favourite either but not something I would choose to paint for myself. (Those will be later this week, and yes one is another zombie). These will help Matt bolster his North West Frontier collection and  we are already talking about a game. So you should get to see them on the table before the end of the year.


 That's it for today. I am still kicking myself about not photographing all the Egyptians (Colonial) I painted, but nothing I can do now so in my head trying to move on and get past this.

£25 THANK YOU Money well spent. (I think)

yes I won £25 on Bryan's ( LINK AKA Vampifan's) Blog. I am sure you are all regular readers so I will say no more about the blog.

So here is what I spent the money on. (I believe it had to be wargames or at least wargames related.... NO I could not just buy beer, jeez some people) I did scour the internet and try to find the best (for me ) BARGAINS. Top to bottom left to right!

• A set of Deep ones. These are Black Cat bases (SHOP LINK) For a while I have thought about doing a bit of Lovecraftian wargaming/roleplaying. I  had not seen the figures in the "flesh" and just did not know if they were any good. I am delighted to say they are lovely. When I sent the order off I had no indication of if it had arrived or how long it might take or anything else. So one day about 12 (less than 2 weeks at least) later I received a small parcel via the ROYAL MAIL>  I will e getting more from this company now I have seen the quality.
• 2 figures from Dave Stone at Warganes Terrain Workshop (WTW shop link) I was surprised that no one else had said that they wanted the free figures. Well Free figures has my name all over it! And seeing the two figures That I received I am so very pleased I said I did want them.  They are both Judge Dredd figures. One (the large) is a 2 part casting of a gorilla judge. I say 2 part casting as it has a choice of weapons. (Either a lawgiver or a stun baton) To my eye the baton is the best choice as I think I would be more scared of a gorilla with a baton than a gorilla with a gun.  And Tweek. I was never a huge fan of Tweek in the comics, he was all right but to me he was more an annoyance than a supporting character. Each to their own though and I am sure others will have the opposite view. Of the two figure I prefer this figure. Not being in a judges uniform it can be used in any sci fi game. personally (not that I am any judge) I prefer the sculpting as well. I have always had VERY daft ideas about putting on a "Clangers" show game and this figure would IF converted make a very nice "Clanger". I did say it was a daft idea.
• I was also very lucky to get a pack of Type I Ho-Ni Tank destroyers for my slowly growing 15mm Japanese force. More about the Ho-Ni (Type I) when I get around to painting them. Ideally I would have preferred some Chi Ha medium tanks but 3 of those would easily have tipped the free moey way over the top

So £25 well spent in my opinion all of which have uses, although not all are exciting and new projects but once again a BIG thank you to Bryan.

1 More Zombie

Not a huge amount of figures today, in fact just one. For those that play the Walking Dead All out war this should be a familiar figure. yes it is a  28mm Mantic Zombie. Without being racist it is clearly a black zombie so as a strong contrast I went for a white (OK Off white) Tee shirt. This had the duel effect of showing of the blood effects very well. Perhaps there could have been more blood but it is always easy to over do the look so I stayed back and tried to keep it somewhat resaved. When I was younger the red stuff would have been everywhere.

Clearly the zombie is missing his left arm and also his right ankle is very badly broken. Which means he drags his foot behind him. This is something I do like about the Mantic Zombies, the fact that they have missing and broken limbs. This clearly means that thy must have suffered some pretty violent demise.

I did worry about the skin colour as well in zombie form but I think it has turned out OK.
There is another zombie on the painting table so that one should be finished in the next few days as well. I must say I am a fan of the plastic that Mantic use as it paints very well. The sculpts are also top notch so overall they are a joy to paint. I do not want to invest too much time in this though as the basic set is pretty basic and as such does lack a lot of options. That said I am going to paint it all and even think about making a dedicated terrain board. IF I do I will show it on my blog.

Chinese Gordon

A figure painted yesterday afternoon. May I present Gordon Pasha (AKA Chinese Gordon, Gordon of Khartoum) or his less well known name Major General Charles George Gordon. ( LINK TO WIKI ).

Clearly a hero of the Victorian age, but most well known for his failed defence of Khartoum against the Mahdi.


I am sure we all remember the film but there is also a statue locally of him riding a camel. No You cannot see it as it inside an army barracks but trust me it is there.

Additionally you may recall seeing this famous painting which is probably the most famous painting by George W. Joy. And serves very well as a tribute to the Victorian Hero.

The figure is 28mm by Perry Miniatures (As Matt so kindly reminded me). And all the colours have been taken from the painting to the right. Clearly the artist was not present at the battle so perhaps the ending was not quite like this. Then again if you read Major General Gordon heroic exploits in the Crimean war perhaps it was.

Either way he is a hero without doubt and served well in the Sudan where he ended slavery.

Matt was due to collect him today but due to illness has had to postpone until later in the week or maybe this time next week.

Either way the figure was a joy to paint and I am sure he will be appreciated when Matt does collect him.

First try

Yes my very first try of painting French Napoleonic's in any scale. So pleas point out anything the is wrong. So I can get better. I do not need anyone to get super fussy. If they look all right simply say so. IF you want to talk about the thread count of the linings then kindly find another victim.

Pedantic rivet counters are invited to keep their own council. Just generally do they look suitable for the wargames table?

Having Never painted French before I really did struggle to get these close to being right but I do realise I may have made a god awful gaff. So if it is glaringly obvious please point it out.

The figures are 28mm VICTRIX plastic and I have started the next 4 as well. Tim wants them in units of 12 for a game so any quick help would be appreciated.

Royal Navy Landing Party (finished)

When I say finished I actually mean finished for now until I stoopidly buy some more or new figures are release or well you know.

The troops with pistols have been seen before and are both an Officer pack and a Royal Navy brigade Boarding party pack Available here (http://www.ironcladminiatures.co.uk/)

 Separately they are . Roayal Navy Brigade landing party with Rifles. 1 pack of 4figures. Very nicely sculpted and cast but not exceptionally so. And should your boarding party need longer ranged weapons than pistols rifles of carbines are the way to so.



there is a set with a machinegun but it is a deck mounted gun and thus of less appeal in a game setting due to it's lack of manoeuvrability. That being the case I probably will not purchase it.










We also have the "Royal Navy Support weapons" pack. Just 2 figures with 2 "heavyier" weapons.  The first being either a Volley Gun or some type of light machine gun depending on the rules you use. While the second is either some form of grende launcher or a form of scatter/shotgun maybe a Trench gun. As there are no descriptions it if up to you and the world setting and rules you could use.

These are painted with the feeble excuse that I can now use them in a "In Her Majesties Name" (IHMN) game. You never know perhaps I will. Several at the club already have the rules (as do I so it is just a case of getting going. There is no reason not too for me now.

There you go another blog post done and as the rain now falls It is noticeably cooler so maybe more painting very soon.
