Necessary but not pleasent.

Hi Folks, I have struggled to get anything done these last couple of days. No Physical problems, just apathy and lack of direction. It is so much easier when you know what you are supposed to be doing and can crack on with it. I have finished my reading book and can't get into a new one and my usual selection of computer games has left me feeling Meh! I shall blame the weather for now although I really know it's just a passing phase and a few day down the line and I'll have rocketed forward with enthusiasm.
That said I have finished 4 stands of casualty markers for my US Infantry PBI company, So It has not all been a waste of time. These are by Peter Pig and while casualty markers are no ones favourite things to paint they are necessary for some games, PBI being one of those. Hence the blog post title. For many people casualty markers are unpalatable but for me I have no moral issue with them. There has been some discussion on wargames boundaries of late on a couple of blogs I follow (Hi Brian, Hi Lee). And for some people this would no doubt cross some sort of line. Personally I would rather put some counters like this on the table than for example a dice (die! No Pun intended).

So before this gets heavy and maudlin please remember if you see someone without a smile on their face, give them one of yours.

All the best Clint

  1. I know the feeling well. Winter is lingering too long for me and I have to force myself to get on with my day. Mainly I just want to sleep until Spring weather actually arrives.

I think the casualty markers have a place on the table. In the interest of historical accuracy they belong there. We shouldn't ignore the harsher realities of war.

    Nice work Clint!

    1. Cheers Anne. I think it's the weather as well as the fact that I am on Annual leave.

  2. As you may be aware I think they're a very necessary part of the gaming table, very nice work Lee, this weather and the painting challenge have left me feeling very flat!

    1. I can imagine the flat feeling after the challenge, I am sure I would want a month break. Hope to find out next year!!

I agree I think for wargames they are needed. We are not playing "fluffy wuffy bunny games" well not with the guys at the club anyway!

  3. I see nothing wrong with using corpse figures in wargames. Casualties are a fact of life in war. Mind you, I am a zombie gamer, so I'm used to being surrounded by dead bodies!

    1. I am aware that some folks don't like casualty markers but I should admit, that until I was made aware of that I had not given it a second thought.

  4. Casualty markers are simply that - markers and nothing else. I think wargamers know the horrors of war as much (if not more) as anyone else. I have never had a problem with them; people have to remember it's a GAME and meant as nothing more.

It's tough having a bout of lethargy, I find having a session of shooting things on my computer helps (Red Dead Undead Nightmare is good for this).

The weather doesn't help, but we have the long, long two days of Summer to look forward to.

    1. I've been killing Germans on "Saboteur" and generally BLOWING THINGS UP. Not sure it's helping too much.
But I have found two things That I had thought lost, one of which is for the fishing village!!! SO I might start to crack on with that this afternoon!

  5. I am feeling the exact same feeling! From the book to the games! :D

As for dead bodies, that is a thin line...personally, I find them as a nice touch, as I think that if that would bother me, gaming war should bother me. I've actually put plenty of dead soviet on my FOW german stalingrad army. But hey, I don't "dig" the pregnant zombies and similar miniatures so I guess everyone stops at some point.
It is same with involving politics in the game but I better stop now! :D

    1. I prefer them on the table to counters or dice, but I am aware that for some people it is distasteful.

    1. Cheers Phil. Casualty markers do add to the games look and for PBI they are needed in game terms so I don't regret them.
