Lancers

And here today I have finished some more 10mm colonial mounted troops. This time lancers. As they were bought on eBay I cannot be sure of the make, but I do not think they are Pendraken. Still they are nice enough and have kept me busy of late. Again I have gone for the earlier coloured uniforms as I am not such a huge fan of the khaki later ones. This means I will be able to use them from Zulu Wars. Yes I will also use them for the Sudan just because I see little point in getting them and painting them again in a different coloured uniform. I am not a purest!

As you can see I have taken them head on and in side view. 6 stands in all, 2 figures to a stand for a total of 12 lancers. This I hope will give me more than enough for what I need.

The Final picture shows all my 10mm British colonial cavalry. The very observant among you will note that the lancers helmets are a different colour. This is deliberate as the Lancers had a cream helmet in all the pictures I have seen and the other cavalry had white helmets! If you know better please let me know and I will re paint them.

That's it for today. More again on Sunday. I will admit I am not sure what I am painting next so that could be a pleasant surprise for both of us.

Until Sunday, have fun and with luck I will see you again soon.
All the best Clint

  1. Fantastic looking cavalry. Can't go wrong with some "knights", can you? :P

  2. A fine looking force, especially in your first photo with them all in a line. Nice background photo, by the way. It's very effective.

    1. Thank you Michael. I must say that I am happy enough with them.

  4. I have a soft spot for lancers (that's why I have Uhlans amongst my 6mm Napoleonic Austrians). "Black Powder" rates them highly, but is there any real evidence that they performed substantially better than other types of charging cavalry?

    1. Lancers have a role, but if that was the only cavalry role why would they bother training and raising other types of cavalry? As the Mardists had a tendency to lie down many Cavalry did use native spears as lances. Thank you Hugh.

    2. I am no expert, but lancers used lances - that's a huge advantage at the first charge. And if they carried sabres as a secondary weapons, they might as well be called huzars. That's all so complicated. Dragoons weren't even an "actual" cavalry at the beginning and so on :D

  5. Nice looking bunch Clint. Is the guy front and center making a salute?

    1. Thank you Anne. That is an officer and he is looking into the distance, at least that's what I think he's doing.

    2. It looked like a salute to me. He does stand out, hopefully not to the enemy though.

    3. Don't forget British salutes have the palm facing out while American salutes have the palm facing down. It does look like an American salute though. If he stands out to the enemy yeah that would be a bad thing.

    1. Thank you Fran. Yeah I do like lancers. I am tempted to get more but I would have no use for more, which is a shame.

    1. Thank you PK. (and PK's echo!) I happily admit that I care more about the look of them than the reality when it comes to uniforms.

  9. Charge! Stick it up em! Nice job Clint they look great I have to admit the blue uniform is far more striking than a khaki one would be.

    1. Thank you Simon. Khaki would look dull on this scale. For WW1 onwards I can see a reason for camouflage but this period almost cries out for bright colours!

  10. Some fine looking chaps you have there Clint, I'd probably have gone for the earlier uniform as well......khaki can be a touch boring sometimes!!

    1. I think the earlier uniform is better, more colourful which is better for the scale. Thank you Ray

  12. Lancers iirc, were a "fad" in the British Army., a leftover from the Napoleonic wars. I found that they were nearly always overated in wargames as normally you just don't have enough of them. Just about every army at this just "had" to have units of lancers, if for no reason other than they look good !
Good looking unit and I'm with you on using them for more than one "period", they could possibly have used their coloured uniforms in the early part of the Sudanese wars. I reckon the officer is actaully holding a telescope, but how you can tell at that scale is beyond me.
