New Project Alert.. You are warned.

For the long standing members of this blog you may remember this post LINK about plans for 2013. Well one of them is now on the top of my to do list so I will be starting a new project this week. Gasp shock horror! No it is not chariot racing (maybe by this time next year! Maybe!)

I have mentioned it to other club members and it looks like there is a strong possibility of doing 6mm Cold War Era wargaming. So as It stands it looks like we shall be doing this for our broadside game next year. Unless I get side-tracked or another club member wants to do something else. So we shall see what happens, but as I type this I have good intentions.

This is as much a return to my roots as it is a new project. As I used to play this kind of game a fair amount in the 80's I have found my two armies from this time and will start to re-paint and re-base them over the coming months. I will also build terrain, in fact you may say I have started already as I have three boards carcassed-out and ready to start work on. Don't hold your breath though they are a very long way from finished yet. Merely boards and Battening at this stage, nothing more.

To the right you can see some of my current bedside reading. I do have more rule options as well but as "Challenger 2" was my choice of rules back in the day I have a feeling it will be where I start. First Clash is not a rule set, but more an alternative history.

The following Blogs have inspired me so I would like to say THANKS to them as well. There are of course many more blogs out there covering this topic so this is in no way a definitive list.

http://coldwargamer.blogspot.co.uk/  Doing it in 20mm but packed full of top class information
http://stoppingtheredtide.blogspot.co.uk/ Doing it in 15mm
http://whirarwistan.blogspot.co.uk/ Another 20mm site (more modern than cold war)
http://bleaseworld.blogspot.co.uk/ 6mm Arab Israeli War
http://www.blmablog.com/ 6mm WW2 Western Desert

Well that is just a very short list and I am sure you have got your own favourites for this period and scale.

But now that my SCW game is coming to a conclusion I will be able to concentrate on a new project.

Thanks for looking today and I will have some painted figures by Friday. Just on the basing now.

All the best Clint

  1. A new project? Are you really, really sure you want to go down that route? You are? You mad fool!

I actually bought Challenger II back in my teenage years when I was originally wargaming, but never managed to get around to actually buying any forces to game with. Maybe some day....

    1. As mentioned above I already got two forces for Challenger 2 so a minimal out lay. And is it really a new project if you re-paint and re-base an army from 25 years ago.

      Thank you Tamsin.

  2. I still have all of The Zone novels and remember them with great affection. I played a few games of it in 20mm and even scratchbuilt the Iron Pig APC as shown on the front cover of the novel you've shown. I wish you all the best with this project. Will you be using the characters from the books or just basing your games on the world setting?

    1. I have the first 5 novels in this series as well. I wish I had all 10. I will be using the setting, not the characters. I think at 1300th scale depicting the actual characters would be beyond me. Thank you Bryan

    2. That's a fair point, Clint!

    3. Although I say I will be using the setting. It will be more about general "cold war" that that 1 series of books. Thank you Bryan.

  3. Good luck with this Clint, it's always exciting starting a new project, but you do seem to have a good start on this one, perhaps it should be called "a project restart" ?.
(I'm finding it difficult to understand how you're going to include camels in this though.)

    1. Ah well I have looked long and hard and found the 5th US Camel Troops a detachment of the 5th Mountain Regiment.

OK Codename "Project Restart" it is now called.

      Thank you Joe.

  5. Thank you Smilie. It is a period and scale that takes me back almost to my wargaming roots.

  6. 6mm seriously. That's way too small for me, I struggle with 28 mm.

    1. Thank you Bob I am beginning to like the smaller scales. But I should have some 28mm figs to show by the end of the week.

  7. What? You haven't even let the dust settle on your Spanish Civil War stuff (let alone played a game, as far as I know)!

Cold War really doesn't appeal to me, but if it interests you then good luck and I hope the project goes well.

    1. No not played a game of SCW yet. But all ready too. But my club has games boked for the next 6 weeks.

This will not be ready for quite a while so better to get on with something than just sit around and twiddle my thumbs.
      Thank you C6

  8. I still think this is a great choice and wish you good luck Clint! If you can paint 200 trucks for SCW, surely you finish this one as well! :P

    1. Slightly less than 200 trucks Mathyoo But I do take your point.

    1. Thanks PK. Many of us more mature Gamers grew up on Challenger II so it has a lot of Nostalgia.

  10. Yes Cold War Gamer is great i hope you recapture the thrill of the 80's when you (re)do this project.

    1. I realise it will never be the same and maybe it is a futile effort to try to recapture the past. However many of the old sets of rules and games did have a lot going for them.

      Thank you Robert
