28mm Viking-es

Yes a female Viking. Hence the "word" 'Viking-es' I do not think that is a proper word so be very careful about using it. This figure is one of Colonel Bills "Beltfed" miniatures range which are a selection of saucily clad females in various historical costumes. And this one is of course a female Viking. As I want to do some Conan style wargames this year she seemed to be just the right type of figure and for £2.50 I thought a bargain.

She was also the last figure I painted for the Analogue painting challenge and was mostly done for some fun and relaxation. I can honestly say I did muck hers skin up on the first try and it came out looking somewhat grey and dirty. Which was not my intention so I did paint her twice out of necessity.

While I did find the sculpt and casting very nice my only pet gripe is that her trousers came with the vertical markings for the stripes scratched in. While not a problem as such it does limit her to having striped trousers as to paint them in another way might show the sculptors marks. While I will only ever get one of this figure it is not a huge issue but I will forever feel that the choice has been taken from me and that everyone will paint stripes on her bow. That really is my only quibble with the miniature.

I am not totally happy with the shield I have painted either. I might re-paint the end part of the tail so that it is in line with the head, it might give it a better balance. What I do like is the shield design though and the colours. It is only where I have put the end part of the tail upwards. That is a very minor issue and I can change that in moments when I start painting today. What I do like about the design is the ambiguity between is it a "Longship" or a sea serpent. I can take very little credit for that either as I saw the design on a re-enactors shield once long ago. So credit should go to them, or the source they used for it.

Overall I am happy with the figure and for the price would struggle to find a better one.

Thanks for looking. One more post to go to catch up so expect that about Wednesday. Take care have some fun and may your paint pallet never run dry or your inspiration wane.

Cheers Clint

  1. You know, the first thing that I thought when I saw her was "Nice trousers. I like the stripes". Then I read on a little and realised that you weren't so keen :-) .

She certainly looks the part for a Conan movie/game/story, though!

    1. I do Like the stripes but realise that because they are part of the casting everyone ill do stripes. But as I do not think there will be oh so many of these at the club I am quite happy with them. That is the cue for everyone to run out and buy the figure in the club now!

      Thanks C6

  4. Nice! I really like the colours of her trousers

This is one of the beltfed girls that I don't have (saying that, I've got about 4), but seeing your paintjob (and reading your fantasy idea) has really given me an urge to buy the mini and give a go myself.

    1. Thanks Roy beltfed are not figures I would buy unless I had a use for them. And Conan wargaming seems like the right use for me. I already have several rules choices, but have not settled on the exact one just yet.

  5. If only I could find a use for her I'd buy her in an instant. She is such a cool figure to use in a Conan-esque game and I do like your brushwork. Top banana, Clint!

    1. Cheers Bryan. I think there might be a modern topless medic in the range. Not that I can think why she would need to be topless but there you go!

    1. Thanks Bob. No one would have any problem with a topless male Viking and as an equal opportunity painter I can see little wrong with a female version.

  7. Nice work Clint. Even if they are casted into the piece, the stripes came out nice also :)

    1. Thanks Kyle. And Just because I have done them as red and ochre stripes does not mean that other people will follow suit. I am now tempted to get another one and re-paint it with 3 colour stripes!

  9. Very nice work Clint, and a rather fetching figure to might have to keep an eye out for her at Salute (funnily I was looking at Col Bolls web-site last night and didn't notice the beltfed range. Hmm you've got me thinking now and that can only end badly!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. There are some nice figures in the range. But for me not all that many uses for them. This one I can find a use for though so was delighted to get her.

As for it ending badly when does it not!"!!

  12. I like the stripes and the miniature in general but I do agree with the stripes scratched in it seems like you had no choice. I like the shield design but the last tail bit the arrow seems like it could be removed.

  13. Great stuff Clint. I think you've done a marvellous job on her. You're certainly braver than I as I avoid stripes and shield decorations at all costs. Yours have come out very well though; especially the stripes.

  15. Interesting mini that has a couple of good things going for it. You've bust your record for painting with this one imo and have dug deep into your chest of tricks.
Keeping abreast of these figures is a tough task but someone has to do it.
Nice brushwork btw including the stripes !
