Yet more Woodland Indians!

Well the title gives a very good clue about these figures. Continuing with the Redoubt 28mm French Indian Wars range today another 4 Indians. I am grateful to Simon Jones for leaving a comment on my last lot of Leather stockings. I am sure he may be correct in that they were made of trade blankets by this stage, but I will continue to paint them as leather for three reasons. Firstly because the James Fennimore Cooper books are called the "Leather Stocking Tales". Secondly because most players mine included expect them to be this material in the same way that many people paint Ninja figures dressed in black where there is NO historical evidence of them wearing black. And Thirdly because I like the look and they may not actually be used as historically accurate figures.

So this time they are a musket heavy group. There were 4 muskets in a £7.50 pack but I swapped one out last time and replaced with a war club one. Surprisingly good value I think despite the fact that they are a little chunky in places. Let's put it this way I am happy to have the figures for the Price.

The third Photo shows a little clearer on the Faces. You can all thank or curse Anne for that! For War paint I have stuck to black, white and red just to keep them all looking somewhat regular in setting. I have not looked at any traditional references for the war-paint preferring to just make it up and be happy. You will see that some have it around the jaw and others on the forehead and yet others still across the full face. For Gaming purposes I am happy to mix and match like that and not do any in-depth research! yeah I am a lazy so and so! So If you want to do the research and let me know I will be happy to listen as it will save me a job!

The final picture for today has all the ones painted so far together. Only 11 but they look quite fearsome and imposing, at least to me.

While I have no Donnybrook plans for them they may or may not get used for that. In the back of my head I do have a "Fantasy" use for them (I can imagine Ray shuddering) but one should be careful about putting "Fantasy" and "Leather-stockings" in the same sentence!

Thanks for looking today, have a good weekend and get some painting done!
I have some to do as well..... more mundane than these!

  1. Looking good Clint

Can I ask what colours you used for the skin tones, please?

    1. Thank Roy. I think the skin colour is a bit dark. But I start with a base colour of GW Dark flesh, then add GW Dwarf flesh for 2 successive highlights.

  2. They look really good, Clint. Good on you for including the close up shot of their warpaint and for the group shot.

    1. Thanks Bryan. You can blame Anne for the close up and Joe (Not seen for a while now) for the group shot as he always used to ask for one. Cheers Mate.

  3. Splendid stuff Clint, and I'm a big fan of a group shot - and yours really doesn't disappoint. You've really painted a wonderful little group there. Great stuff :-)

    1. Thanks Simon, so far so good. But I will add some more as I go. I think I can get to 18 before buying any more, but buying some more is on the cards.

    1. Thanks Ian, I suspect Rays are apaches from the look of them. But I wish you well in case you do win them.

    1. Thanks C6, while I do agree my models my rules I am open to learning a few things and trying to get some details right. The next batch might be slightly different in some regards. Minor things but Important none the less.

  8. Very nice Clint, very nice indeed! Are they any tribe in particular or just generic indians from that time period? Have you got anyone for them to fight against?

    1. Thanks Bob, at this stage just a generic tribe, so nothing too special. And NO, no opponents for them just yet but I will probably get some settlers for them to but heads against!

  9. Thank you for doing the close-up! I do like the way the faces look and I believe I've seen warpaint very much like this. Also the group shot looks great.

    1. Thanks Anne. I will do some more quite soon, but I am just reading a set of rules at the moment so painting is a little bit on hold this week!

    2. I haven't played the two games I have as I can't understand the rules. I've looked at game play videos, but they assume you already have a particular body of knowledge. And I don't have nay of that. There are no clubs anywhere near here. There's a huge city called Indianapolis about an hour and a half away, but no gaming clubs are there. There's only one gaming store in the whole of that giant city. Truly, I am living in hell :0)

    3. I did a quick search on TMP and they have a few club contacts for Indianapolis which might be worth a shot but they seem mostly Napoleonic based, but they should be able to assist more than this idiot from across the pond. Also 2 games shops mentioned and a comic book store, but they did not seem to recommend the stores too highly. But a quick chat to the workers/owners of a store should give you other avenues to pursue. If I had the money I would fly out and show you myself! So feel free to email me and ask as many questions as you like and I will do my best to answer them. There is no such thing as a daft question, just daft answers. So I am more than happy to help as I am sure any true wargamer would be. If you don't want my help, I know Ray would be willing to help, he's a decent chap after all.

But if you cannot game no worries you are an accomplished painter and that is such a big part of the hobby.

  11. Nice work again. I quite like the chunkier looking figures there far more easier to paint I find.

    1. I agree. Chunkier figures have a bit of a cartoon quality to them that makes them fun to slap paint on! Thanks Simon
