And so the madness begins.

For those expecting "Burpas" this week, there has been a delay. They are being worked on so they will be along shortly.... maybe NEXT week. Until then I received these this morning. Purchased on eBay for less the £7 including postage. Ok so why get them?

Well you may recall I did mention Dieselpunk! Well these are destined for that project. One has some slight damage so that will be the one I start on. While 4 can be used for VBCW, Gangsters, C'thulhu or anything else I can think of. As they are all 1/43rd scale and thus suitable (only slightly too big (and I do mean slightly) ) for 28mm figures. In fact once on bases 28mm figures will be about the right size.

The 2 trucks will e weathered and don't really need much beyond that. But you know me they will have a complete paint job. as a fuel truck is better than a condensed milk truck! At least in wargames terms if not real life.

So what needs to happen and by when? Well firstly there is NO rush and I would rather get it right than get it wrong. Not that they are at all expensive BUT that I am well shall we say "Frugal" that sounds better than miserly.  I shall start on the green car. As you can see the radiator grill is missing and the "Canvas" top is broken. So starting on a broken one seems to make the most sense.  As I do intend to base them all it will need a base. I am thinking hardboard. This will allow me to cut and "stretch" the vehicle. I know this will be a hard job so expect it done over the Christmas period. Although I do hope to start to "Chop" it next week. I might do a step by step walk through.

Knowing that someone... you know who you are! Will ask about both rules and Figures. I can confirm I already have the figures and will get more as soon as I can acquire them both at the right price and condition. But you will see below that I already have some.

Rules wise I am looking at 3. Osprey "Gaslands" which MAY be either good or bad I have yet to see. "Gorka Morka" the old GW set but heavily modified, or "Mad dogs with guns!" which are a 1920-30's gangster set but just may be right.

That's it for today. And NOW I best get on with the Painting of Burpas and get my head out of the clouds.

All the Best Clint

  1. This looks very interesting and I'm glad you've posted this instead of your Burpas. After all, one Burpa looks pretty much like another Burpa! ;-) Kidding, okay!

I'm very curious to know how you're going to chop and stretch the green car. It's not something I'd want to try!

    1. Thank you Bryan I am SURE it will go wrong several times but if I get it right it will be wonderful (or at least good).

Stretching the car will be a problem so mayhap a few work in progress shots may be called for. Let me try one and see.

  2. Sounds like a fun project. There are the Mad Maximillian game coming from Eurueka miniatures which could be right up your street with these vehicles.

  3. This looks REALLY interesting! :-)
"Klintz Kustomz" is opening for business - the Chassis Chop Shop for the Discerning Dieselpunk Driver.
I shall be following with interest!

    1. Thank you Addict. It is a long road (pun not intended) I have ahead of myself. After all it is so much easier to take someone else's work and make it your own. If this works out it will be a glorious achievement.

    1. Thank you Dave. I hasten to add the stretching may not work at all. All I intend to do is cut the bonnet and extend it. hopefully sympathetically to make a longer and more powerful looking vehicle. Longer bonnet, bigger engine. maybe extent the back possibly with an extra axle as well. But the extra axle is not so far on my to do list.

Just anything with makes it look either more streamlined or aerodynamic or with a larger engine. Sticking some Big exhausts out the back would be an easy start.

  5. Good stuff!

Some of the Statuesque minis in their Pulp Action range would look good as dieselpunk - http://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/c/4513057/1/pulp.html

    2. Just checked them. Indeed you are right they would work very well. But let me finish a car first and then see how I feel.

    3. They also have mechanics with outsized spanners, etc. Perhaps in their Sci-Fi range.

      Not very frugal though!

  6. Why oh! why did I follow the link to statuesque figs, this is going to cost. Almost sprung £25 but managed to hold off (for now). There are 4 figs that just cry out Dieselpunk death race and a pair very suitable for gangsters. Frugal has got nothing to do withit those sculps need paint.

    1. Thank you Tim. I agree there are some cracking figures. I am waiting until I see how much I spend at Selwg. Also IF I can progress the cars at all. It may all be a flash in the pan if I cannot get the results I would like.

Time will tell. BTW you are still pencilled in for the first game, be it planes or cars.

  7. Terrific stuff, Clint, absolutely inspirational. Really looking forward to seeing how this goes, and already eyeing a few purchases in order to imitate your corking idea in the future. This should be awesome :-)

    1. Thank you Simon. I am NOT expecting it to be easy so do not follow this with baited breath at all. The cars on eBay are quite cheap so I would hold off and see if I can manage this first.

Like you I do like the idea (a lot in my case) but then again I also like the idea of English folklore wargaming and Samurai Naval. Nether of which has (as yet) been acted on. So ideas are easy carrying it out is MUCH harder.

  8. A very interesting post and I'll look forawrd to see where you go with this even if I can't see the attraction, (there are after all, some very big 1920s/30s cars).
Bethat as it may I have the "Mad dogs with gunes rules" and they read very well; they're the best gangster era rules I've seen for a good while too.

    1. Thank you Joe. What attracts one person will repulse another. WE are after all very much different. Let me see how I get on and then when I have some results it "MAY" become more of your thing, or it may not.

While I have the "Mad dogs with guns" rules I have yet to read them I am waiting for that with much anticipation. The only thing that puts me off is terrain for a game. Maybe the open road is the best option.... maybe it is not!

    2. You're absolutely right of course "one man's meat" etc. and I' for one have never been taken by the draw of fantasy in many eras where real-history has been replaced.
Terain for a Gangster type game could be as simple as a road in the countryside, then later add a barn, a farm house, a garage and in no time at all you'll have all the terrain you need I reckon. I read many a good aar with little to no terrain.
Get around to reading MDwG - I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy them.

    3. Thank you Joe. Tim at the club is currently building some city streets so perhaps terrain is coming to a wargames table near me SOON. He wants "Whitechapel" but I am sure it will work just as well for Harlem. But as you say we could concentrate on bootlegers to start and see where it goes.

      Cheers Mate

  9. Ooh, you've got me thinking about converting one of those vehicles now - florist wire, greenstuff, balsa - and creating a speedster. Good stuff.

    1. Thank you Roy. Now do not steal all my ideas!! Actually so far you have stolen none of them.

I will start tomorrow as I need to buy a new hacksaw. After that it either works wonderfully or I give up and throw it in the bin..... Realistically it will probably end up somewhere between the two extremes.

    1. Thank you Edwin. I will admit I had already found them however I may not have been so lucky so I must really thank you for pointing it out.

A couple of my club members (Tim being one) followed the link you supplied above and I suspect an order will be sent to Statuesque Miniatures later this week.

Personally I need to wait a while but will tell you that there are some I want. But for now I must wait.
