20mm Local force Viet Mihn

Yes continuing with the Vietnam conflict today we have local force Viet Mihn. These are all locals fighting for the communist faction. They are Viet Mihn as opposed to Viet Cong as there was no such thing as Viet Cong EXCEPT that the US forces called them Cong as it sounded more aggressive than "Mihn". But strictly speaking they should be called Viet Mihn and NOT Viet Cong!

Rant over, there are 26 in all with a wide variety of weapons. And 1 Casualty marker (I may have to buy a few more). The weapons range from rifles and carbines through sub machine guns and Ak47s all the way up to LNMGs and Rocket propelled grenades. Simply put they were using everything they could get their hands on including stuff from WW2 and the French Invasion a few years before up to and including the stuff supplied to them from China and Russia. I have very few LMGs or RPGs just one of each so they are very likely to get out gunned at most opportunities. But as Local force militia they will rely on ambush and evasion. Firing a few shots from cover and then disappearing rapidly and taking any dead and wounded with them if they are able.

All the figures are SHQ and 20mm for easy of use with vehicles and my US troops. There will be more of these to show soon, but also some NVA and some south Vietnamese army as well, but in lesser numbers as I want to keep the games manageable. And Games do get over complex sometimes with too many figures on the table. Dependant on the rules uses of course. But as I am looking for a squad level game more troops would be gilding the lily I suspect!

Thanks for looking, I hope/plan to post again on Saturday. But If I don't have a great Easter.

Take care Clint.

  1. They are fantastic, Clint! The bases are simple, yet make a clear setting!

I would have to disagree with there being no Viet Cong, they were an organisation that fought the Americans in the South Vietnam, while Viet Minh was an organisation that fought Japanese and French in North and was ruling (presiding?) North Vietnam at the time of the American incursion.

    1. Thanks Mathyoo. Viet Cong was a made up American name, Honestly there really were no Viet Cong. I have used the Viet Minh name for want of a better one.

    2. Ah! I had another read (everything makes mroe sense when one is rested!) and I know what you mean now. Viet Cong was a name put together to mean "Vietnam Communist" (or apparently "Communist traitor to Vietnam).

The official organisation was named something along the lines of "National Liberation Front" or Liberation Army of South Vietnam and so on. They were not Viet Minh, but as they were connected to the North, I think your choice of name is very sound if you don't want to call them Viet Cong!

(sorry to complicate it all, I find it fascinating personally :D)

    3. No worries mate. Everyone is allowed to call them what suits their belief best. I am sure there are people that call me things as well.

We all have different views and it is important to accept every one of them as equally valid. I may well be right but I am just as likely to be utterly wrong.

  2. Good to see the opposition to the "Free World" forces have arrived.

    1. Thank you Joe. It is not much of a game if the sides are not in some way balanced.

  3. Your bases continue to impress. You'll need some North Vietnamese regulars to give the players some nasty times.

  5. Chuck some zombies in against these and the Yanks, '68 on the tabletop! I thought it was a contraction of "Viet Nam Cong San"(Vietnamese Communists) or "Viet giang cong san"(Communist traitor to South Vietnam).

    1. I will check your information but the "QI elves" say there are definitely no Viet Cong. If you do not watch UK tv you will have no idea who the "QI elves" are.

The term Viet Cong was originally used in a Saigon newspaper in 1956. Using the words that you have used above but the real name if we follow that argument should be, "Mặt trận Dân tộc Giải phóng miền Nam Việt Nam" Which many writers shorten the Translation to National Liberation Front. But by using the term Viet Cong you are in no way using a title they would have used for themselves.

Feel free to use what ever term suits you best. But I will use the term they used for them selves.

      thanks Bob

  6. Bob and I read the same graphic novels so I must admit I was also thinking of throwing zombies into the mix for a true '68 experience. '68, by the way, is the name of the comics the books are based on.

    1. Well that would be interesting and the rules would cater for both. In an FNG/ATZ mix. I must admit not something I had considered but then again maybe why not! (just have to source some 20mm zeds and we are away.

      Thanks Bryan

  7. Great looking troops, Clint. Victor Charlie, Charlie Cong. Yes, the US military does have a way with labeling enemy troops - it's gotta be part of the psywar ops!

    1. Thanks Dean I think you may be right.

But I should learn (Eventually) to be less out spoken.
