Frostgrave 1

I have been invited to play "Frostgrave" on the weekend. So I have started to watch Youtube videos on how to play the game and read what I can online.

Not the ideal way, but getting some ideas. So while I wait for paint to dry on the next batch of figures for Matt (more BUF). I quickly gave this old chest a lick of paint to make it more "Frostgrave" like. Whatever that is.

so while the serious painting is underway I thought to get a few bits and pieces dome. Only the chest finished though, but I expect a full warband re-painted and based before the weekends game.

So this blog post today is just to acknowledge that I am now interested in getting a Frostgrave force together.

I hope to post aging tomorrow with some VBCW figures, it is just that the paint seems to be taking a very long time to dry today.

Cheers Clint

    1. Thanks Robert, I like what I have read so far. I may have found a killer spell though, 15 damage if successfully cast! But I suspect there may be a flaw in my plan. So have asked a few other players if my thinking is right!

    2. But how much damage if unsuccessfully cast! lol

    3. Well having checked it will not work in the rules. Which I am pleased about as it would unbalance the game and everyone would do it. But as the spell is 8+ (Summoner) even if you rolled a on the d20 and took 7 points of damage to get the spell to work the enemy wizard would still be dead and your wizard still would be alive. So dead enemy wizard with yours on half health would still be a win as far as I am concerned!

As mentioned above though casting Leap is on own models only so the second tactic of casting it to bring them closer again would not work!

  2. go for it, if it doesn't work then try a different one. I like the blinding light spell. Turns the target into .... well a target for a couple turns at least.

    1. Thanks Martin. I will check the rules first as I suspect if I am allowed to do it, it will very much change the dynamic of the game. It will be like hide and seek with bazookas!

    2. It is covered in the etera. Obviously someone else thinks like me.. "Leap" spell can only be cast on own figures. My plan was to move enemy figures 10 inches into the air and drop them and let gravity do the work. At 10 inches that would be 15 points of damage from falling! Cast on 8+ (d20) with no armour saves. and line of sight it would ruin the game so I am glad another has already tried it! And it is now corrected!

    3. Genius idea. Why not, if they fail a magic save then it's curtains. I've just watch the finale of Fringe on Netflix and they use antigravity bullets that cause the hit to float off. As the quote goes it doesn't kill them any faster but it does look cool

  3. I am the only person not playing Frostgrave? That said, I am curious to see how you get on Clint.

    1. I'm not playing it either Michael - I'm still painting up my Wizard and his group ;-)

    2. Thank you Michael a battle report on Monday (if all goes well)

    3. Thank you Simon I will be using some old figures with a bit of a repaint and base. Cheaper quicker and less effort I hope!

  4. A nice little start Clint, as that chest has a very nice rust effect to it. Looking forward to seeing more of your "Frostgrave".

  5. Frostgrave is all the rage these days and everyone seems to be having loads of fun with it. The Lead Adventures Forum has started a forum just for Frostgrave. You might want to check it out as their are loads of great posts there.

    Have fun with it Clint!

    1. Thanks Anne. As a game it has loads of potential. But let me see if I enjoy it first.

    2. I predict that you will enjoy it and then I predict that you will be painting Frostgrave figures for Matt :0)

    3. Once again Thank you Anne. Matt is not playing Frostgrave so I am not convinced as yet he will ant any wizards painted. But only time will tell. I am told that Peter wants some Saphis painted though so that will be bight and colourful.

  6. Just played my first game of Frostgrave with my son. Action-packed and brutal...lots of fun.

    1. Cheers Gordon. The first game is always tricky with a new system. In that it will take mw a while to get into it. But having played Mordhiem I at least have a basis to work from. But perhaps a scaffold from which to hang myself.

  7. Oh dear, another fool succumbs to the cold side. Hope you enjoy the game at the weekend :)

    1. Sorry Tamsin (thanks for the comment btw). But if everyone in my group is doing cold based figures doing tropical or jungle bases would look odd. I really love your setting idea.

    2. Ahhh, I see what happened there. I tried to be clever about turning to the cold (rather than dark) side, forgetting that my plan is to do Meso America. :)

Note to self - stop trying to be clever. You make yourself look stupid when you try ;)

    3. ps - to prevent any confusion, the "self" and "yourself" in the above refer to me, not to Clint :)

    4. Thanks Tamsin. Trying to be clever is so much better than trying to be dumb. So never stop!

And I am a huge fan of your pre-Columbian setting. I really do think it an inspiring choice.

    1. Thanks Fran. Check out some youtube vids on it. As a system it could be very good.

  9. Frostgrave, not really my cup o tea, but I expect you already know that, Clint, but you've gotta admire the figures and the whole Frostgrave set-up.

    1. Thanks Ray. I am going to use old figures. Some from roleplaying and some from GW.

I was anti Frostgrave to start with not really liking wizards but having been invited to play I do like the set up.

  10. An incredible amount of buzz out there for this game. The bandwagon is rolling along in our neighbourhood as well, with new warbands springing up all over the place, yours truly included.

    I'll be following with interest!

    1. Cheers Evan. You are right it does seem a phenomena. I think one of the reasons is that you play games quickly and with only a few models. Do you remember the Fuss when DBA FIRST came out?

  11. Well, it's certainly flavour of the month, isn't it :-) ? I'm watching from the sidelines with interest...

    1. Thanks C6. There is much to like in the game. Each school of magic seems balanced and interesting. The rules are simple yet effective. I might suggest this as being your type of game. Great for young club players and for those that look after young players.

  12. Suffice to say you have a very manly chest there Clint. I just don't understand the attraction to Frostgrave though, I'm guessing it's the huge commercial backing and hype that's been given it to make it "flavour of the month". I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

    1. Thanks Joe. I was very much like you about Frostgrave, but now looking deeper into it I can see it does have some merit.

  13. a bit to my surprise I love the game it its really energized the local gaming community in my area and gotten a bunch of guys whose only war gaming experience was X-Wing to pick up some brushes and start painting.
