Land ship WIP

Much as I dislike Work in Progress posts this time I feel I do need to do one.

The figures are shown for scale  and are 10mm Pendraken. The land ship is intended for that scale and for that colonial period. (Being Victorian Science Fiction). So I have put a Mounted officer a Gatling gun and a foot stand all ready to show the scale.

I started with a 15mm "Forged in Battle" tank as I want a certain "Heft" to the model and do want it to look quite imposing and by starting a scale larger it does immediately posses those qualities. The donor vehicle is actually miss cast so I was able to buy it at less than half price.  And while I did originally want to use it as a WW2 German vehicle it works better for this.

So starting with a Char 1 Bis hull (And ignoring the turret) I first reversed the way it was heading and added a "Boiler" to the back. I have yet to add a chimney as I suspect that will be the final piece BEFORE painting as it will probably double the vehicles height and there fore be easy to knock of unless I am careful.

While I am mostly working with "Green stuff" I am also using some plastic sheet rod and tube to alter the vehicle. Side sponsons are also being added to which guns will be fitted before painting.

The turret ring has been filled in and I will be adding a 1lb pompom gun and crew as a pintle mount up on the top deck.  the kind men at Pendraken will be supplying the gun and the crew and it should be arriving soon! So I should be able to crack on pretty quickly when it does.

As you can see I am not a sculptor, but the beast is coming together reasonably well and I am sure it will look impressive when it is finished and sitting among my British colonial troops be they in Zulu Land, or facing the Mahdi or the Boxer Rebellion or in some imagination setting maybe against the |French or the Prussians.

Thanks for looking today I will get some Burpas done next.  I hope to have 4 finished by this time tomorrow so expect them in my next blog post.

TTFN  and with luck see you all soon.

Cheers Clint

    1. Thank you Citizen. I would rather have waited and shown it when complete so that certain things were less obvious than they are now. But with No Burpas finished last night I was stuck for a post.... so this will do.

    1. Thank you Michael. I like the size of it, it really is a beast and yet at the same time is somewhat believable. I hope the final result does not disappoint!

  4. I like the WIP posts, as much as you seem to like 10mm figures!! Looking forward to more of this project Clint, it'll be interesting watching you build the tank up! Love the new header too! Is that you with the mutton chops?

    1. Thank you Ray. I do very much like 10mm figs, all the advantages of 15mm figs but cheaper, so what is not to like! The next post for this will (I hope) be the finished piece painted and ready for the table top.

Thanks for the comment on the header, just a quick image search was all that was needed. As for Mutton Chops clean shaven. I have shaved TWICE this morning (just because it was so refreshing!)

  6. Ooh, cracking idea. The 15mm tank really works well, in this instance, with the 10mm figures. Looking forward to seeing the progress on the piece.

    1. Thank you Roy. Taking the donor vehicle out of scale does improve the Victorian feel of the tank. And by selecting an early war tank it should, I hope, seem less obvious as my start point!

    1. Thank you Bryan. I will be looking for a name soon. In my head it id just the Beast. Which is very UN Royal Navy. Matt has suggested HMS Thunder, which I quite like, but I am edging towards HMS Caliburn. But I am open to other suggestions but NOT HMS Tankie Mc Tank Face or any thing like it.

  9. A great start mate! That nice flat top where the turret ring was might make a good "common platform" which stout chaps with begoggled pith helmets stand proudly and look suitably British

    1. Thanks paul. I was thinking of putting a Pom Pom gun on that platform with of course Royal Navy crew. Although I do have spare Army officers so perhaps an officer wearing goggles might be included! Only time will tell.

  10. The model yoou've chosen, is a good starting point for your 'landship', and gives you a great 'canvas' for your conversion. WIPs I find really interesting and are a great inspiration to many, myself included.

    1. Thanks Joe. I do not like showing WIP as I like to change my mind with each step so do not want to deceive people. Also I like showing the finished article and letting people try to work out what I started with. In this instance a Char 1 bis, I wonder how many people would have recognised it by the end.

Still what is done is done and I cannot go back in time and change it now!

    1. Thank you Fran. VSF seems like your kind of game. And the vehicle will not be used to invade Franonia... well probably will not be used for the invasion of Franonia!
