A few more peasants

Yep just 5 more peasants in 28mm. While I am not sure I do think they are all foundry and just maybe Draculas castle is getting that slight bit closer to being over-run by angry villagers.

Today we have 4 with scythes and one with a hatchet. I am sure you can work out which is which.  Again I have used Bruegel as my start place for colours of the period. And while other colours do exist and could be dyed it is worth limiting myself to a restricted palette.

I suspect these will be used for "En Garde" skirmish rules but they could easily double for ECW or medieval or as mentioned above some semi historical  horror games. And I must admit that idea does entice me. After all who would not want to lead bands of peasants to storm a Victorian castle and slay the evil professor or Vampire or werewolf or other nasty! I think it would be a fun even if limited game.

Thanks for looking today. Enjoy the sun/heat and I will go and get a haircut this afternoon to cool down.

All the best Clint

  1. I think you could easily run a horror game using En Garde! as your game system.

    1. Thank you Adam. I agree. But it all comes down to what players want to play. But it is an Idea I am exploring! Maybe I will put a sample Army list on my blog!

    2. I could see a Monster Hunter war band. The Monsters are a little harder with in the existing rules but wouldn't be too bad. I may have to think about this one.

    3. My group is considering "frost garde" using the frost grave settings and possibly spell list but combat based on En Garde!

    4. Frost Garde sound like a nice idea. But For me I would stick to some of the old films. Films where the magic was rare and considerd evil and un-earthly and banned by the church.

If I follow this through a werewolf warband would be my first start point as the rules already have dog rules.

Followed quickly by Vampire and Frankenstien warbands!

    5. Brotherhood of the Wolf would be good inspiration as well

  2. Well I think you should make a child and female player friendly public participation game, where players control a farm hand with scythe and the object of the game is to cut the crop from one end of the field to the other before the rest - Basically, a race. Random chance cards featuring snakes in the grass, bouncing bunnies (where you lose a turn if you accidentally chop of their ears by accident), too much cider at dinner break possible having the farm hand going backwards or another random direction. Then to top it off you could allow the players to have their character throw apples, carrots, muddy crop-stubble clumps at each other, an action where they forfeit their move for the turn in an effort to shoot at another player - range modifiers counting - and if another player is hit then there could be a small table of happenings, from injury to throwing something back!

I'm surprised I've just come up with all that :)

    2. You're alright, I was only joking.

I'll give the idea to Stu and tell him he should get someone to do it for a Colonel Bills ppc game at a show next year. Gives him chance to get all those C17th Depot Battalion figures used, while advertising his business at the same time. He'll probably tell me to go away and stop giving him headaches! :))

    3. I am looking at some of the Belt fed girls to see which could be Vampires. And as you say the Depot Battalion also has some period pieces which can easily be used. I will have another look at them as well.

That is of course IF I do not use these historically!

    4. Sounds like an especially dull Eurogame. :)

    5. Thank you Michael. Obviously I cannot please all the people all the time. To even try would be a stage of insanity!

  3. Good additions to the 'peasant rabble', in preparation for their inevitabe revolt. The idea of using period paintings for colour ideas is a great one and these are well up to your usual high standards.
It does amuse me that it's commonly thought that a scythe can be a viable weapon - from my own experiences they're not!

    1. Yes Joe the Scythe could be used as a melee weapon but if so they are holding it VERY wrong. It is upside down for a start! But early film makers had the revolting peasants carrying them so sculptors and makers produced them.

  4. Looks like that lot have murder in mind and heading up to the castle! Great job Clint.

    1. Thank you Michael. My Peasant box has about 15 figures left in it at present so I feel there may be more arriving on the blog in a week or two. And as for murder in mind most wargames figures are NOT peaceful!

  5. They look terrific Clint, great sculpts and paint-jobs. I can certainly see why they'd inspire people, as I don't play anything close to their genre and I want some!!! Wonderful posting :-)

    1. Thanks Blax. Obviously they are useful from Dark ages to English civil war as well as fantasy both for big battles and for skirmish. I have just stuck 5 more to bases so more will probably be shown next week.

  6. Nice job as always old boy, v nice. I see them as angry mob type models maybe could do with some flaming torches? As for the melee weapons you'd be better off with a sickle than a scythe much handier...

    1. Thanks Andy. Yes flaming torches would be good. I did prime a figure with a sickle last night so should be ready next week sometime.

  7. Your peasants are revolting. I especially like the fellow with the beard on the right, he takes his scything very seriously. :)

Curious to see what you do with them in the end!

    1. Thank you Kyle. The truth is I bought them as a job lot of unpainted lead on eBay. So I am not totally sure who made then. Casting and Sculpt wise I think it is the Perrys (wargames Foundry Very early)

As for what I will do with them it all depends on if I get side tracked or not!
