Lanchester 6x4 armoured car

I have been slow off of the mark.  I blame the football! However I have managed to finish (just) a 20mm Lanchester armoured car (6x4). I accept that many will not have heard of the Lanchester armoured car (LINK) as I had hardly heard OF IT Either. So if you know nothing about it you are completely forgiven and if you know too much about it seriously "get a grip". For those who don't know(Raises own hand) it was built in 1927-28 and served the British empire as a "Colonial" armoured car until the outbreak of WW2. So totally suitable for my Back of Beyond (BOB) games.

As you can see from the photo of a Real one, it is not made up even if I have not seen one in real life. While not that effective in a BOB setting it should I hope do very well. I believe this one is at the Bovington Tank Museum. You can use it in WW2 as well as 2 were given to the Belgium army while the majority served in Malay ad I think Singapore! Elsewhere they were part of the home guard and used to protect cabinet officials on journeys. So unless you are going to make scenarios up they will never get a huge amount of use.

This one is 20mm (1/72nd Scale) by Front Line Wargames (LINK) and I purchased it from Tim as a "Mist cast" for the princely sum of £1 (Bargain) while at the Broadside show.  .In all honesty I do not think it will get a massive amount of use despite in my head (and so far only in my head) a game where British armoured cars have to stop a train! All in my head may come to fruition and may not, so do not hold your breath! The Mis  cast now painted does not show, in fact if I had not mentioned it I doubt anyone would point it out!

This one based and painted for Back of Beyond I have painted sand. but in all fairness I have no idea if any actually were they may all be green. Photos are mostly black and white and of training so I may have taken some liberties with the colours but as it will only be seen by club member (at this stage) who am I to worry!

If Tim Miscasts some more I shall snaffle them up all to bring the Train chase that stage closer. But until then this will just be an armoured car perhaps even captured and used by a different side.

That's It for today. Have fun, Paint if you can or at least plot and devise some fun games.

All te best Clint

  1. Great painting as always Clint, have actually seen the one at Bovington as we do a show there each year, and this years is just over a week away, will have to go and have another look and read the background on it

    1. Thanks Dave. Not the most well known vehicle they have I am sure. But suitable for Back of Beyond and that is all I need.

  2. Very nice. I don't think I've ever seen a Lanchester AC before so this is a new one on me.

    1. Thanks Lee. It is nice of you to say so many would have tried to bluff. It is one of those interwar vehicles that is seldom seen. Hardly every used in wargames and I don't think ever to appear in a film.

    1. Thank you Michael. Considering that it is Miss cast I do not think it has come out bad at all. Now to get to B+Q before 6pm..... and they are off!

    1. Thanks Andy. In some ways I feel the model is too tall. ut that is perhaps because I have looked at it for too long. We both know how that goes I am sure.

  5. Unusual armoured car, one I hadn;t heard of either and probably succeeded the Rolls Royce one ?
Great paint job though I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been 6mm considering how much detail you seem to get on such small models too

    1. Thank you Joe. Lanchester did also make armoured cars in the first world war. But this having 6 wheels is a later one. Did is succeed the Rolls Royce armoured car. Well NO is the short answer. The Rolls Royce continued in active service for longer and was fitted with a new turret for the desert war.

As for it being 6mm I am not sure and have not looked to see if any company make a lanchester 6x4 in 1/300th scale. I just do not know. But I do take the compliment non the less.

  6. Wonderful post, Clint, featuring a well-painted mini and lots of lovely exposition as to its background. I too try to visit Bovington annually, predominantly to part with my cash and give it to Dave Stone on his stall (LOL), but can’t recall seeing this beastie before, so will definitely look out for it next time.

As you say, I would never have known the mini was miscast unless you had said, and even now I can’t see anything obvious - a real bargain therefore as it looks like a cracking sculpt imho. Excellent post :-)

    1. Thank you Simon/Blax. Tim does miss cast but he hardly ever sell them and being a perfectionist what he calls a blemish in casting is usually hard to find. They are usually in the form of air bubbles and this had a couple, but not big and easily painted over and hidden.

I will probably be parting with Money in a Mr Stone Direction tomorrow as I need to go to the local decent games/model shop and they do stock his stuff. But the less said about that the better and I SHALL be home in time for the footie!
