3 Dusters!

One of the things I have noticed is that when as a club we play wild west shoot-out games, the figures wearing "dusters" are always selected in preference of those wearing just shirts and trousers. I am sure each club member will give a different explanation as to why. Some will say they are cow-hands out on the range and therefore need a big long coat. Others will say "oh I just happened to pick that one!". One or two would admit they like the article of clothing. I think they mostly get picked as they are seen as more romantic representations of the old west. But I know the club would argue against that thought. Anyway I picked these three up at Cavalier in February and they have finally fought there way up the pile of lead to the top and I have given them a lick of paint. All three of them came in one pack from "Artizan Miniatures" sold to me on the day by "Second City Games".

I made a decision to paint them all in different colours as I did not want it to look like they had all been to the same store on the same day and walked out with matching anoraks! I happily admit I did enjoy painting the duster coats, nice long flowing cloth which takes the washes and highlights very well. I am very pleased that they all look different despite the fact that all the browns started from the same mix and hue which was then added to a second colour (yellow, or black or brown) . This created a range of linked colours with which each figure was painted. (Ok apart from the yellow neck tie and faded red union suit (long johns). Over all three more to add to my collection of wild west figures.

Due to family issues I have struggled to get anything else started. So given that it is now 3pm on Sunday I really will have to get cracking if I want anything ready for Tuesday and my next blog post. So until then have a good time and I'd best get busy with the brushes!

later all, Clint

  3. These figures have got to be amongst my favourites that you shown.
Duster were iirc the favoured wear of cowboys on a cattle drive and frock coats were the higher end of fashion worn in towns.
I think that people favour the above subliminally believing they can conceal a sawn-off shotgun beneath them.

    1. Thanks Mate, Glad you like them.
I believe you are right about trail and town wear. Makes little difference to my club they want figures in Dusters!

  4. Great paintjob!

I would prefer dusters as well, and I can easily admit it is because they look a lot cooler :D

  5. The duster is so strongly associated with the dangerous, steely eyed gunslinger and I think that does add to its appeal. I like the cream one you did here.

I've just spent two weeks working on a figure wearing a duster and chaps. Those two things gave me fits!

    1. I know The duster looks good and has appeal for the steely eyed gunslinger types. But I don't have many figures in dusters and my players always use the ones I do have.

Two weeks well spent I would hope!

  6. Dusters and longcoats increase the toughguy- look factor. tihnk back to how many movies you've seen from westerns to sci-fi where the tough guy had a longcoat.

    1. In films yes I agree, the toughguy look factor can be an issue. I think the thing I am really whinging about is that all the club players take the guys in the dusters first. And by the time I have sorted all the players out there's none left for me!!!! The gits!

  7. They are more like a modern western movie than the ones made in the 60s perhaps?

    1. You are right they are more "Once upon a time in the West" than "High Noon". (Two of my favourite Westerns).

  9. I like Wild West figures in dusters and for me it stemmed from films like "High Plains Drifter" (Clint at his meanest) and of course, "The Long Riders" (the James/Younger gang all dressed in beige coloured dusters with black collars and looking as cool as Hell).

    1. I agree Bryan. And perhaps that's my point wargamers are influenced by films. As the duster figures are always picked first.
