Beau Geste (or Carry on Follow that camel, I will let you decide!)

Yes I have enough figures for a trial game. The problem is, and it is not really a problem, more an issue to work around. Anyway the problem is people turning up at the club with no plans and hoping to squeeze into another game. They are not to blame, I do this any number of times in a year. But as it stands I DO not have enough figures for them to do this in a FFL (French Foreign Legion Game), Given a few months it will not be an issue, at all.

But at present I only have 7 FFL. I have enough MOUNTED Arabs But not enough dismounted Arabs so maybe after a few practice game up the shed on my own I can invest in some more. The good news is that TIM down the club (LINK) makes them. you may have to specifically ask for FFL as they are WW1 French Conversions and I do not think they are on sale just yet. But he is a nice guy and will probably sell some if the money is right. Anyway all the terrain is built and as mentioned the Arabs are painted. So finally at very long last here are the first of the FFL.

They are 20mm NOT 15mm or 28mm, a proper scale 1/72. (No one knows what 28mm is due to scale creep and while some call 15mm 1:100th scale it is closer to 1/123rd scale if we are being purist! as a man at 1/100th scale would stand 17.78 mm tall and not 15mm)

Climbing off soapbox these are 20mm or 1/72 nd scale.. As mentioned above they are all IT MINIATURES (follow the link above) should you want any.

I plan to use an adaption of the "Songs of Drums and Shakos" which in my head I am calling "Songs of Blades and Kepis" I only really need to re-write the points costs for each side and we are good for a game. However that is at least 1 month away (the Game). Due to other commitments down the club and a show, maybe 2.  So as ever my mind is faster than my paint brush.

That's it for today, just 7 FFL finished and a lot of waffle.
All the best Clint

take the vehicles out and we have an Arab town
in 20mm

  1. Very interesting, This takes me back to my childhood when i played with the Airfix French Foreign Legion and Arabs and of course, the wonderful Fort Sahara, all of which were 1/72nd scale. A shame I no longer have them.

    1. Thank you Bryan. I agree entirely. Having used a "Fort Sahara" last year in a couple of games I will admit it is better suited to 15mm figures. But it really is a piece of our childhood. (And EXPENSIVE on eBay now when they do turn up).

  2. Very nice looking start to your FFL collection Clint. Don't worry about your mind working faster than your brush - I think most of us suffer from that happening!
Having most of the Arabs and the terrain sorted means you're coming out of the starting blocks at a good pace, and from what I know of the "Song Of" rules family, you won't need TOO many more figures to start gaming.

    1. Thank you Addict. I agree another 6-7 FFL and as many foot Arabs and I think I will be done. (I already have about 40 on camels). The terrain is all done as well so it could be a swift little project.

  3. Good minis and good memories, Clint. This all looks very good to me, and perhaps you will inevitably end up painting more models for other people, but for now, you have enough to enjoy a game yourself - so take advantage of it!! :-)

    1. Thanks Blax/Simon. I am already booked for game at the club for a few times so I cannot in all honesty expect a game of this for a month maybe 2.But A promising start I am sure.

    1. Thank you Michael. While I might be aiming for dramatic and cinema-esque. I suspect there will be some Carry on elements involved with certain members of the club.

  5. Nice work on the FFL. I am sure you won't be able to help yourself and expand them lol.

  6. Is the officer Commandant Burger or Capt Le Pice? I'm guessing the former as the figure seems to be of similar height to the men.

    Nice work Clint :)

    1. Thank you Tamsin. I must plead complete ignorance on that question. I just do not know. Tim only makes one FFL officer so it is a generic officer at this stage... open to being named by whichever player is in control of the force.

  7. Very nice FFL models Clint, they should look great on that scenery. Will be interesting to see the BatRep on the game and if it turns into a cinematic masterpiece, or a bit of a carry on !

    1. Thank you Dave. I will be aiming for some classic action but we all know some player will make some comment and it will go down hill from there. But I think it is an under played period perhaps because ther is a lack of films about it, perhaps because it is not British history.

  10. I wish my brushwork was as fast as your own; great figures btw and as you say, you've got the opposition and terrain all ready to go too - bonus!
