A couple more tanks

yes two more 15mm tanks for "What the Tanker!" A panzer MK III and a T-60. The Panzer 3 is the big one (Not words I have needed to say before!). As we tend NOT to think of a Panzer 3 as being a large tank.

It looks like I have surcummed to peer pressure at the club, Or as others would say seen the light. As such this will be the last Russian tank for this project for a while.

Instead I will swap to Early war France for now and see how that goes. I did after all get 2 kills and would not just throw them away! The T 60 in particular while fast not fast enough to be rated as a FAST tank is interesting in the rules as it has a low profile. In the rules this means it will need an extra acquisition dice in order to acquire it. This is I my opinion and if used correctly quite a bonus.

But As I will no longer be focused on the Eastern Front (no more snow for a while) I have re-painted the Panzer III to fit the colours of France (and the Low Countries) in 1940.

Therefore this is the repainted Panzer 3 in a mid-dark grey. Now I find it interesting that the German tanks were repainted after the Spanish Civil War to be a Grey. As they fought the Russian tanks which were then Grey (I believe the Russian tanks were shipped via Mexico and they may or may not have been painted there!

As a side note Russian tanks were painted Green after the SCW so it seems that they swapped colours. What actually happened I don't know but to me it seems odd! There are 2 more Zvezda kits on the paint table. So it is likely that at least 1 more will be in the next post.

BROADSIDE SHOW: As a club we shall not be running a game this year. We have had a string of bad luck and were down to 2 peeps to run the game. Therefore with regret we have been forced to pull out! I shall still be at the show of course so either hide from me or say hallo whichever suits you best. I shall possibly be on a Flea market stall.

Until next time. Take care, have fun and get something done for the hobby. (AND NO EXCUSES!)

  1. Excellent stuff. From my one playing of the rules so far I am convinced this game system has the potential for longevity. I've been gathering together the few 15mm tanks I still have (sold most of my stuff a few years back!!) and have enough for some more test games... and I've ordered the first tanks I need for 1940/41 western desert games.

    1. Thank you Lee Western Desert does sound good. I think we will stick with France for the moment and see how it goes.

  2. Great looking tanks Clint including the repaint. The colour changes between the countries is very interesting, when did they start painting them in colours to suit their terrain ?

    1. Thank you Dave. In answer to your question it all depends! I think from the very earliest they were painted to match the terrain and possibly break up the silhouette. Grey is effective camo in urban setings and does match the terrain. I think the true answer is that did what ever they could to survive the longest in all eras.

  3. Terrific posting, Clint, and one which has tempted me to give the rules a try - ordered from "Two Fat Lardies" and perhaps dust down some of my "Battlefront" tanks. Thanks - I think ;-)

    1. Thanks Simon. For some groups this will be a stand out game, for others a waste of time. All depends on the people you play with. Remember the rules are open to any scale, so just use the tanks you have.

  4. I need to sort a day off for Broadside as I'm currently scheduled to work :(

great tanks mate and as always a nice history lesson too, strange how the countries just seem to swap "team colours"...

    1. Thanks Andy. The change of colours may be misleading. I only know about the Russian tanks from Mexico. The rest of the Russian tanks may have been green all the way. But you are correct before the SCW German tanks were Green and then after the SCW they were grey. It may be down to political pressue I just cannot say or it may be down to the Russian tanks doing better in the SCW then the German. But the Germans did not send any "Big" tanks. Mostly Panzer 1's if I remember correctly.

  5. Nicely painted tanks, Clint, and I agree with your decision to switch to the early France campaign, especially after your victory last time.

  7. I am in the process of doing exactly the same thing as you for What a Tanker!

Despite my insane collection in 20mm peer pressure makes me now collect in 15mm too .. the way of madness I humbly tread!

  8. Great tanks, but does the T60 count as a Tankette ?
As for colours, all my German tanks had the grey applied to them as I wanted them to be used on any theatre - even Africa! (-Tunis).

    1. Thank you Joe. The T 60 is a light tank. I have heard the term tankettes but I do not really understand it. It sounds like a diminutive tank but on the battle field if it is coming towards you in a hostile way I am sure I would look on any tank as a fearsome thing.
