Batch 4 (Finished)

Yep later than expected the latest batch of Burpas are now all based varnished and put away. I was expecting to finish them last night but a day later here they are. & figures finished since the last update, they are a mix of makes, Perry, Foundry and Empress miniatures.

Obviously another leader in the purple with a silver horse on his shield, the others are somewhat duller in colours with cream and brown dominating. There are other colours as well, mostly as turbans or belt sashes or shields just to break up the earthy tones. One rather flamboyant chap is in baby blue and pink (or as I like to call it faded red!)

They all fit in with the horde as the bottom picture shows as the whole batch stands together.

Quite a fearsome bunch!

Thanks for looking and maybe something on Sunday and maybe nothing til Tuesday I just cannot tell yet as nothing is even started.

So with luck see you soon, all the best Clint.

yet more Burpas!

yes one is on a horse. last night I finished 7 more Burpas, all 28mm from a mix of makes including Emperess, Foundry and Perry Miniatures. It gived them a nice mix and helps them look more like a rabble. Which I think is the look that Matt is going for. And to promote that look they are also from different ranges, some are North African and others Indian Hill tribesmen.

I have 7 more to paint in this batch so expect another 7 figures painted soon. Well soonish, I have the para Olympics which needs some serious watching as I do admire the atheletes who overcome adversity to achieve!

AS you can see these do look quite diverse and yet still look realistic and to my uneducated eye just about right for a colonial period game.

Below are some close ups and it surprises me how well they seem to fit with the terrain. Considering the backdrop is actually America printed out on the computer.

That's it for now, thanks for looking and I hope you day goes well.

All the best Clint

Yesterday at the club!

Firstly let me say it has been a good weekend. Firstly  I was given 2 cases of beer (And that is always a good thing). Not that I am a big drinker and this will most likely keep me going until Christmas!

Secondly on Saturday afternoon. Zombicide arrived (purchased via eBay) and the game was like new in condition despite the eBay listing saying it was used. So needless to say this made me happy as well.

And then at the club there was a large colonial game in 15mm British vs Egyptians but as my new zombicide game had arrived I passed on this game (it already had 6 players which should be enough) and sat instead with 2 board game players (Kev and Ian).

Our first game was "Mansions of Madness" a C'thulhu board game very similar to the Roleplaying game. It was run by an APP on a tablet and played very well indeed. I was really quite taken by the game.

Our mission was to check out the mysterious disappearance of the mansions owner. The game did start slowly despite there being a "Hunting Horror" in the kitchen which was terrifying the butler. Kev was playing a Grave digger, Ian a Secretary while I was playing an Urchin.  I am not sure why an Urchin would be involved but I was.

Things went well we had found loads of clues and very little monsters and I was encouraged to open the wrong door. So Open it I did. The result was a High Priest of Dagon (Who was the mansions owner) 2 Cultists in different parts of the building and 2 more Hunting Horrors all at once.

I became seriously wounded but still in the game. Kevin went insane and Ian also took a serious wound as we all tried to stop the rital and close the gate.

The conclusion was we failed! Kevin Died while Insane, Ian died out right and I went permanently insane trapped in another dimension struggling and failing to close the gate and stop the ritual.

Score 1 for the C'thulhu mythos and zero for humanity.

That game over (and not prematurely) we played "Zombicide!" We Played scenario 1 in which the object was to get food water and rice equipment cards and have at least 1 player escape from the board. None of us had ever played before and the game went slowly. Yes I did make a couple of mistakes with the rules. Nothing major. The first 2 times a fatty spawned I did not put the additional walkers on for example. We also played a house rule allowing players to shoot into other zones and IF they hit they did not hit other players.

The game started well but players being the individuals they are split in order to get more loot./Objectives. Probably a mistake as mass attacks do tend to make a difference when it comes to staying zombies.

Phil (AKA Rick) was the first to die as I sacrificed him to let Josh move away from any trouble because Josh was carrying some Rice. Eventually it was too much for us and despite kev having an uzi on each character (Found during play) and making 5 Noise tokens a turn there just were too amny of them. Ian was equally handy with a chain saw but we conceded the game when a wounded Josh was the sole survivor the other end of the board and only carrying 1 of the three things we needed.

But Both were good fun games despite our losses!

Dawn and time to storm the castle. (no Not yet)

Ok it is not dawn and time to storm the castle. But the photos have that quality due to the light levels when taking the pictures. THIS WAS NOT DELIBERATE! I think it was just too early in the morning and the sun (or I) was not awake just yet. I could muck about with the light levels on the computer but decide against that plan.

So 5 newly painted Peasants with a variety of weapons including one with a sickle! £ of the weapons were broken over time so instead of pitchforks and scythes they just carry clubs. I am OK with that as too many pitchforks and scythes would appear wrong in my opinion. I still have more pitchforks and scythes in my lead pile so if no more break I will be happy.

At the end is a group shot of the 15 so far painted, and an acknowledgement that I am about 1/2 way there. Looking at the group shot I see I need more yellows and mustards and creams so that will be my plan for the next lot. But before I even start them I have Burpas and Zulus already primed. So MAYBE next week.

Thanks for looking today next post Monday and with luck a decent club game.

All the best to you and yours Clint

Back on schedule..... maybe only for 1 day

being back on schedule is not all that! It just means that you are struggling to finish things for the next deadline.

Anyway 3 MORE Burpas for Matt all 28 mm figures and all (I think) different makes. (Empress Foundry, Perry). All Indian Hill tribes and all set for the colonial period.

Yes a group shot will be taken at a later date. the figure on the left has a breech loader with the other two have muzzle loading black powder weapons. And while the guy on the right is brandishing a knife I think we can be sure that the other two have knifes as well tucked into robes. (The guy on the left carries a sword and shield as well so we know he is ready for close combat!)

That's it for today, keeping it short and sweet.

Cheers guys thanks for looking

Just 2 more today!

Due to Dog sitting again I was unable to blog yesterday and also unable to paint last night and While I was planning/hoping to get 5 more finished there are only 2 completed. I am of course referring to more Burpas for Matt.

The one in blue is literally screaming "Shoot me!" he stands out so much. I did picture him as an officer or leader while painting so wanted him to look well equipped and richer than the average figure,  which lead to the lovely blue!

The other figure is just a normal rank and file and while just as important does blend into the terrain significantly better. His long rifle makes one think of a sniper but the truth may well be very much different. It will all come down to what Matt thinks.

I think they are both Foundry figures but from different ranges.

Currently on the painting table I have 3 more Burpas (1 being Mounted) and 5 more peasants and 4 more Burpas an another 30 Zulus which I hope to get undercoated before 8am. That way I can be painting for the next few days without any prep time!

So until next time, take care have fun and plan some games.

You can moan BUT......i don't mean it!

Yes and I do! Moan that is. I dislike painting 10mm Zulus! But when they are done I am happy with them. At this point I think I have about 250-300 left to paint! It is not that they are bad sculpts just that the colours are  very limited and it does tend to get boring painting them. But as I said Once painted and based they look very acceptable gaming pieces. And that is what they are for.

I will be using the Black powder rules,  just for convenience they do work OK but the MGs and Cannon are underpowered in Colonial settings.  All my opponents and myself have found that if you form square with cannon on a corner all the tribes head straight ior the cannon and destroy the square like a hot knife through butter  , which is not what happened in reality! Still I will over come that I am sure.

Anyway these figures are 10mm Newline Design Zulus with headdress. 28 figures in all (there should be 30 but 2 have fallen under a wardrobe and at some point will need recapturing from their escape bid!)

That's it for today, enjoy the bank Holiday while I start to prep some figures for Matt....

Cheers Guys have a good one!

A few more peasants

Yep just 5 more peasants in 28mm. While I am not sure I do think they are all foundry and just maybe Draculas castle is getting that slight bit closer to being over-run by angry villagers.

Today we have 4 with scythes and one with a hatchet. I am sure you can work out which is which.  Again I have used Bruegel as my start place for colours of the period. And while other colours do exist and could be dyed it is worth limiting myself to a restricted palette.

I suspect these will be used for "En Garde" skirmish rules but they could easily double for ECW or medieval or as mentioned above some semi historical  horror games. And I must admit that idea does entice me. After all who would not want to lead bands of peasants to storm a Victorian castle and slay the evil professor or Vampire or werewolf or other nasty! I think it would be a fun even if limited game.

Thanks for looking today. Enjoy the sun/heat and I will go and get a haircut this afternoon to cool down.

All the best Clint

For what it is Worth

Paining over the last week has how shall I put it... been a little sketchy.. that was because I was dog sitting, and they took up a LOAD of time. But it was rewarding (not financially but) emotionally as I now have two extra doggie friends. And NO I will not be looking after anyone else's so don't even bother to ask!

My reward was also Spanish Chocolate.  And I do like trying chocolate from different countries.

Then of course I was at the club yesterday and peter wanted to try a set of rules "Bloody Big Battles" which are meant for some bloody big battles. Firstly let me say I really liked these rules and can see them being used for so many games.

Peter had also sorted out a game of Franco Prussian Wars. In fact it was the Battle of Worth. (Hence the post title). Here is a link to the real battle. ( Click me! ). Firstly let me say I know almost NOTHING about the battle or the war or the weapons or the troops.

Matt was Bavarian Commander, opposite him was Bob the French commander and opposite me was Richard the other French commander. And I had the Prussians. Both Matt and Myself were given the task of 1) Holding the town of Worth and 2) taking a Hamlet close to the French start line.

And anything you read from now on is where it all goes wrong!

I had 2 Units, 1 in the Town and one being shot at by artillery in the open approaching the town. Matt also had two infantry units one camped in a hamlet on the road and one approaching the town in the open. he also had an artillery battery.

Facing Me Richard had 5 units of infantry, 1 of Cavalry and 1 of artillery. While Bob had 2 Artillery, and one of Machineguns and either 3 or 4 infantry. And remember I am under orders to attack!

As my troops were armed with needle guns (Max range 6 inches) while Matt and all the French had breech loading rifles (Max range 12 ")

The firt thing that happened is that Matt failed to activate his troops which could have made it into the town to help me. My Infantry under artillery fire were "Disrupted" And Richard sent a unit to assualyt the town and Bob sent a unit to assault the Hamlet.

Both assaults were repulsed but with casualties on both sides. And then our reinforcements start to arrive.

In Turn 2 the French lead a very strong 3 unit assault against  Worth. With only 1 unit to defend the place I was pushed out of the town and the French now held it. So I would need to get it back!

My Unit on the road also get surrounded and charged by cavalry. I do manage to beat the cavalry off, but again with losses.

Having beaten the Cavalry off I now have the initiative. so My Infantry charge the Cavalry. I Cannot think of any real life battle in which Infantry charge cavalry and the Cavalry receive the charge. But nothing in the rules says he could not so that is what Richard decided to do.  Bravo Richard you used the rules to circumvent historical accuracy. I was expecting the Cavalry to ride out of range and thus continue my charge into the Artillery which was unlimbered and not facing towards me.

Score 1 for playing the rules and not the period or the game.(I may sound bitter about this but I think IF you are playing historical games you should play realistically!

Still I lived with the Reffs decision and did not throw my toys out of the pram. But seriously think about it what would you do sacrifice your own mess mate and friends in order to save a group of people you hardly knew at all.

Anyway in the Melee I rolled a dreaded 1 and Richard rolled a 6. I think we can all guess the result.

To the right my troops fleeing from Worth in disorder. While the French loitered about no doubt stealing Beer and chickens!

Matt does manage an attack on the right of the Village while some of my reinforcements attack the left of the village. Again I rolled a 1 and Richard rolled a 6.

While things were bad for me Matt was also struggling and not having a 2d6 dice roll over 6. So the Right wing wing was failing to make any progress and the left wing was close to collapse.

Do not forget we are supposed to be attacking!

Finally I get some Luck and Ruichard decides to pursue out of the town leaving it undefended. Shame I have nothing which will get in their. Matt rolls a 12 (on 2 d6) and runs out of Ammo. So has to spend the next turn sitting on his arse and not taking the fight to the French. Not his fault, you cannot beat the dice.
My infantry on the right of the town continues to survive and is slowly getting whittled down. And then Shaken, disrupted, out of ammo (I also rolled double 6 the following turn) and just down to 2 stands decide to hold their ground.
More reinforcements turn up for us. Perhaps too little and definitely to late. You can see to the right just how far I am pushed out of the town.
In the last two turns though we do manage to hold our ground and start fighting back. As we now have a critical mass sufficient to focus on specific French units as opposed to the other way around.

We finished on Turn 7 of a 10 turn scenario. All our reienforcements had just arrived and More Bavarians were beginging to circle around the French position. The French had taken the fight to us and it showed, they had only 4 infantry units left and they were battle damaged. But The Prussians had failed to take any designated territory.
If we had been able to continue for the last 3 turns (We could not other hall usurers were due to arrive) I do think we would have won. Matt had managed to circle a Grand battery, Cavalry and Infantry  behind the French and was now closing on his positions and shooting them with artillery in the rear.  The French were on so few troops their wing was due to collapse.

Overall it was a good game but with bad luck for the Prussians on the day. Tactically I would not do much different. Most (but not all) of the Prussian assaults resulted in me rolling a 1 and Richard rolling a 6 which did tend to mean I was usually fighting at a 5 point disadvantage.

But no matter how good or bad you play you can never beat the dice.
The rules worked well though and I would happily use them again.

Peasents

While the Mojo has not returned it is slowly coming back. I wanted to paint something different and that was generally useful but not too taxing and that I was happy to muck up if need be. I did not muck it up!

So here are 5 (I think) Foundry medieval Peasants! Well I know there is 5 of them I am just not sure they are foundry but I will claim they are until someone tells me other wise.

All the colours are from the artist Pieter Bruegel (a Dutch renaissance painter circa 1525) and as he was alive at the time I am going to trust his colour choices.

Why am I painting peasants?
No I am not thinking about Wat Tyler, instead it has occurred to me that the game of "En garde!" we played a weekend or two ago did not have all the possible options. I was short of servants ruffians and general low value troops and I know a couple of people in the club DO value quantity of troops over quality of troops. So some farm larbourer types were always a good idea. So from left to right they are armed with : a side Axe (think hatchet but for trimming "Green Wood", Adze, pitch fork, felling axe, and wooden club. All of which would exist on a large medieval farm or timber yard so all are perfectly suitable for improvised weapons. Rummaging through the lead pile it seems I have a number of peasent types so I have prepped 5 more ready for paint. Mostly scythe armed so they should be along shortly.

The final picture is JUST to embarrass my cousin. I made her some Fudge and those that have had some will know that it is extremely rich so she has had her sugar rush for the day, that is for sure.

First trial with new camera.

Well some success! Not perfect, but I think I can manage the new procedures on the camera. There are extra steps and if this does not come out then NO I cannot manage it. The extra steps are just that it does not save the pictures where I am used to so it will tak me a while to get used to looking in a different place.

Having posted some PICS I have now removed them. I know how to load pics from the camera so I should be able to continue posting from now on.
Thanks for comments I am sure it has all worked great and by removing the pics before Ray comments I can tell myself the surprise is intact! (Not that the surprise was ever a worry to me.

CHEERS GUYS

Anyway the Camera worked the mojo has not returned but all is right with the world.

Thanks for Looking today and just because it is a great image here is Joe Grant with a Dalek. All I can say is not in any episode I have seen on the BBC!
