Yesterday at the club!

Firstly let me say it has been a good weekend. Firstly  I was given 2 cases of beer (And that is always a good thing). Not that I am a big drinker and this will most likely keep me going until Christmas!

Secondly on Saturday afternoon. Zombicide arrived (purchased via eBay) and the game was like new in condition despite the eBay listing saying it was used. So needless to say this made me happy as well.

And then at the club there was a large colonial game in 15mm British vs Egyptians but as my new zombicide game had arrived I passed on this game (it already had 6 players which should be enough) and sat instead with 2 board game players (Kev and Ian).

Our first game was "Mansions of Madness" a C'thulhu board game very similar to the Roleplaying game. It was run by an APP on a tablet and played very well indeed. I was really quite taken by the game.

Our mission was to check out the mysterious disappearance of the mansions owner. The game did start slowly despite there being a "Hunting Horror" in the kitchen which was terrifying the butler. Kev was playing a Grave digger, Ian a Secretary while I was playing an Urchin.  I am not sure why an Urchin would be involved but I was.

Things went well we had found loads of clues and very little monsters and I was encouraged to open the wrong door. So Open it I did. The result was a High Priest of Dagon (Who was the mansions owner) 2 Cultists in different parts of the building and 2 more Hunting Horrors all at once.

I became seriously wounded but still in the game. Kevin went insane and Ian also took a serious wound as we all tried to stop the rital and close the gate.

The conclusion was we failed! Kevin Died while Insane, Ian died out right and I went permanently insane trapped in another dimension struggling and failing to close the gate and stop the ritual.

Score 1 for the C'thulhu mythos and zero for humanity.

That game over (and not prematurely) we played "Zombicide!" We Played scenario 1 in which the object was to get food water and rice equipment cards and have at least 1 player escape from the board. None of us had ever played before and the game went slowly. Yes I did make a couple of mistakes with the rules. Nothing major. The first 2 times a fatty spawned I did not put the additional walkers on for example. We also played a house rule allowing players to shoot into other zones and IF they hit they did not hit other players.

The game started well but players being the individuals they are split in order to get more loot./Objectives. Probably a mistake as mass attacks do tend to make a difference when it comes to staying zombies.

Phil (AKA Rick) was the first to die as I sacrificed him to let Josh move away from any trouble because Josh was carrying some Rice. Eventually it was too much for us and despite kev having an uzi on each character (Found during play) and making 5 Noise tokens a turn there just were too amny of them. Ian was equally handy with a chain saw but we conceded the game when a wounded Josh was the sole survivor the other end of the board and only carrying 1 of the three things we needed.

But Both were good fun games despite our losses!

  1. Two great games, Clint and both looked like a lot of fun. I am familiar with "Mansions of Madness" although I have never played it. Zombicide, however, is my favourite game and so much fun to play... even when you lose. Always learn from your mistakes. A classic mistake that newbies make is to split up. Only ever do this if you are well armed and have a clear exit strategy. I'm sure you'll do better next time. I'm glad you enjoyed both games, even if they didn't go as planned.

    1. Thank you Bryan. of the two I think I preferred mansion. Although I am not sure. Mansions is a lot fiddlier without the app of course but I did like the feeling of the game.

As for Zombiecide, I was playing with 2 experienced zombie gamers so I would hope they would know better, but I doubt I would when push comes to shove! Still I learnt something even if they did not! (But I suspect they did)

  2. Looks like you were playing the new version of mansions, having played the old one and had it feel very slow, I'm really looking forward to the new one as a friend has bought it, good to hear it was fun!

    1. Thank you Jamie. I have no idea which version it may be. The other players did say that it runs so much smoother wih the App than without it. And I can imagine it being fiddly without the app. But it was a good game and good almost roleplaying like.

  3. We had a game of the new Mansions of Madness on Friday and really enjoyed it, a big improvement on the first edition. Zombicide is. Also a lit of fun
    Cheers, Peter

    1. Cheers Peter. I hope you managed to thwart the outer Gods on Friday. As you know we crumbled at the end and bring the doom a little closer.

As for Zombicide... watch this space!

It was a win for 3/4 investigators as they defeated the baddies in time. It was a loss for me however. I went fully insane and my madness changed my victory conditions to killing someone with an edged weapon. The only edged weapon was a nice that got left in a burning room and then destroyed when that room got zapped by the dark side.

    3. yes when Kev went insane his victory condition changed, but his did not affect the game.

There are some very nice rules and twists in MOM

  5. Great stuff Clint. I'm particularly piqued by Mansions? Can you play it w/o the app then, or do you need it (I'm only thinking of a time when the app is gone etc). "Zombicide" is a big hit wiv me, as you know, so I'm really pleased you've finally taken the plunge and bought it. Now all you need are some superheroes :-)

    1. Thank you Simon. You do not NEED the app but it does make it easier to play, as it sorts out all the clues and locations etc. The other players who had played that scenario before said it was completely different by the 2nd Room as the App had changed things around without any need for the players to know.

As for Zombicide. All I will say is stay tuned.

And Superheroes I have an idea for a show game which would look very interesting and might even make magazines if I can ever be bothered to make it. I already have the participation rules all worked out... sssh darn I let my super villain mask slip then!

  6. Sounds like you have had a blast and a great result with the zombicide purchase. The "Mansions of Madness" sounds really interesting, I might have to have a closer look at that myself.

    1. Thank you Michael. Mansions of Madness is a board game but very much like a roleplaying game. It is worth a look but needless to say it will not be to everyone's taste.

As for Zombicide. Watch this space.

  9. You certainly do seem to have had a great weekend Clint.
Getting two games in a single session must have been a great 'lfiter' especially as you got to play with your new toys!
I looked at the original mansions a long time ago and it did seem laborius, but the new one seems a much better bet. As for Zombicide, it never seems to get a bad write-up, if only it wasn't so expensive *sigh

    1. Thanks Joe. Want to play zombicide,? No problem just watch this space.

I agree Mansions could easily be laborious but the APP took much of that away. I am not sure I would ever play it without the APP.

  10. Sounds like an excellent day!

Ah, didn't you know - urchins are *always* present when hunting through creepy mansions! You didn't happen to have a small, scruffy dog as a sidekick, did you?

    1. Thank you Hugh. No I did not have a scruffy dog. That is probably where I went wrong!
