What another new project? Well not exactly. I could claim it is a continuation from projects in the 1980-90's . But I will not. But I might change my mind later.
I will of course admit to being a JD fan, who would claim otherwise? So when I saw these at a good price on ebay I went for it. Normally each box retails for about £24 plus postage so Not bad that I got them for £29.65 including postage.
I have looked at the JD game for a while and thought about it but decided against it. But then Bryan (Vampifan) got me all enthused again and I thought "Hell why not!" So the hand went in the wallet and out came the plastic.
" gangs for less than £30 and a free (to down load) set of rules, might just be the kind of thing that may bring a semi fractured club back together.
I decided to get the Apes first and let's be frank an Ape Gang is just so 2000AD comic book. Where else would you get to play one! And besides a gorilla in a dress well on second thoughts I get to see that every Saturday night!
The second box set was far cheaper, but we can all do with some spare Judges even if they do not make up a force in their own right. I have enough old Games workshop judges for that, but these should round out any corners and we all know players always want a different figure to the one you have yourself. So this lot are credible additions.
Additionally my club want a new show game. Or at least I do so I will have a chat at the Selwg show. I do have a few ideas But just ask yourself when was the last time you saw a Judge Dredd game at a show. Now I am not saying it will be Dredd that is not my first 3 choices but is a strong 4th choice for me. (It would be higher but I also realise that making decent terrain for the game might be an issue.)
Well that is my ramblings for the day. Where this path leads no one knows just yet.
All the best Clint
I certainly admire your choices, Clint, and what a bargain you got yourself. It is always worth checking out eBay for a bargain.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that has always held me back from doing a Judge Dredd campaign was my lack of suitable scenery. Now that has changed thanks to my Urban Apocalypse Terrain sets from Battle Systems.
Thanks Bryan. I agree terrain is a big issue for Skirmish games and it is an ongoing issue. I may never make ant terrain boards for JD. But as mentioned when was the last time you saw any decent show quality terrain for megacity 1?
DeleteMy memory only has one image in my head. And that was for the roleplaying game when it was launched.
I love Judge Dredd, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you do Clint.
ReplyDeleteThank you Roy. Not planed at present so you may have to wait for any results.
DeleteA cracking buy and project, Chief Judge Clint. I'd certainly be interested in your thoughts Ref painting the judges as I had some problems with their sculpts - they are though worth persevering with imho. Good luck :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Blax. I remember the GW Judges from years ago. They were tricky back then. I doubt these will be much different.
DeleteI will have to do a side by side comparison when they get done!
What a fabulous distraction Clint, I love the idea of a Tom Baker Orang-utan!
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael. I am still painting Burpas for Matt, so these are a distraction. Or they will be if I ever get them started.
DeleteGet going on these Clint!! what a lovely addition to your collection and at such a bargain. Anything 2000AD has got my attention already and I will avidly await your daily (I hope) updates on the project ;-P
ReplyDeleteSeriously the Ape Gang was what initially dragged my attention to the Warlord Games project as they look amazing and would be my choice were I to persuade the Nerd Herd to start up some MC-1 gaming! It may happen yet, sadly at the moment they are stuck on Team Yankee.... :-(
Thanks Andy. I am in no rush to start these. And No I will not be naming the ape gang after bloggers. I might loose friends that way.
DeleteAnd although not in a hurry, if I can get it started. You can always pop up for a game one club Sunday if it was not too far, maybe drag a few herders along as well. But that is a long way in the future just yet.
As you said who isn't a Dredd fan?
ReplyDeleteMe, I'm afraid! I never read any of the mags, but even though its Fanatsy/Sci-fi you still gotta admire the figures for what they are. I even painted some to sell once upon a time?
DeleteThank you Fran. Every discerning gent is a Dredd fan.
DeleteThank you Ray. I am horrified. I shall have to start educating you!
DeleteYou've brought back some great memories with this post Clint. I guess it must have been about 20+ years ago I bought a Judge dread figure on foot and on his bike with the intention of using i and others in the JD rpg game. My small group then also played a few games of JD board game too (possibly "Block Wars"?)
ReplyDeleteI can only remember a single JD show game, a vast Metroplolis on a huge table, with flyovers, a rampant dinsoaur and a crashed flyer.
Good luck with this new venture.
Thanks Joe. This is only one possible venture and may never happen. I bought these on impulse and it may not come to fruition.
DeleteI Think that metropolis game is my memory as well!
Ah, I've always admired the Ape gang! Indeed, I think that they and the various robots are my favourite JD characters (I may not be a particular fan of the comics, but I've browsed enough miniatures catalogues to know what's available :-) ).
ReplyDeleteThank you Hugh. I have been wondering if 7TV might be the right rules IF I do not like the Mongoose rules. And If I ever do a show game Apes would be involved, that's for sure.
DeleteAwesome. Some lovely looking mini's in these sets. Look forward to seeing them painted :) Block war!!!! Would be an awesome game for a show.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon. I like the idea of using them in a show game and a block would allow the table to go into 3D very nicely.
