BoB(ing Along)

Yes more Back of Beyond (BoB) figures today.  Again they are 20mm IT Miniatures available from here. ( LINK). They are in fact White Russians BUT the Uniforms were almost identical to the Red army of the region or indeed the Chinese warlord armies of the same era. Yes there are differences but not huge ones and I for one am willing to forgive them on the wargames table.

Indeed IF I want to get more and more factions I will get the same figures and change a few areas like painting the uniforms grey for Chinese Warlord armies, or Making the top of the cap red just todesignate Red Russians. (Red peaked caps were used on some Red Russian units, but not all. )

As you can see I now have 3 squads of 8 figures each, including 2 armed with pistols to represent leaders (Rules suggest no more than 1 in 10). I also have 2 trucks painted for the force as well. Which given the era would make them VERY mobile. After-all motorised transport was not terribly common most defiantly not as common as today in  Western Europe.

I am not stopping with this force just yet either. I may have a better use for these lorries! Next up for the force may be an artillery piece OR some MGs, Not sure yet it all depends on the bases I have at hand. Anyway these are now boxed up and put away. Ready for a game in the next few months ONCE I have another force.

OTHER NEWS: I do have a choice of figures for the NEXT LotR figure. So if you have a STRONG choice Good or Bad foot or Mounted I can now do any of them. IF left to my own devices it will be King Théoden as he has waited patiently on the painting desk for over a year.

Finally I think the club has settled on a game for the next show. But this may well change as more people get back to me with ideas and suggestions. But more of this if/when it happens.

That's it for now, take care have fun and just do your best at what ever you are doing!
Kind Regards Clint

  1. Those look great, and I really like that 3rd photo. Its always something that I've wanted is a BoB army, so seeing what you're achieving in 20mm is fun to watch.

Officially becoming one of Col. Bill's staff tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be doing the SE shows as I think another chap is pencilled in to work those. Bit of a disappointment if that is the case, as it would have been a excellent chance to finally meet up with yourself (and Ray and Tamsin, and a few others I know).

    1. Thank you Roy. My advice is to start with the local shows and maybe in a few years go further away.

As for your own BoB force. My advice is to start with the rules you want to play with. Most clubs will have a wirdo (My club has me!) This Wierdo is the one who wants to play BoB. So do not expect everyone to jump on board as a game idea. But any VBCW player may well be interested. I am lucky in that I already have some VBCW players who like 20mm AND I already have some suitable terrain. So for me it is easier than for many people/BoB players.

    2. Haha, Stu didn't give me the option of local shows (I had those with the training period). I'm down for Cardiff and Bournemouth next Jan/Feb, so two over-nighter's to start with.

    3. Fantastic that he knows you can do it and do it well. I am guessing the training period went well.

    1. Thank you Michael. There is always more to come of course, but this has broken the back of the force. Artillery next I think.

    1. Thank you Bryan. As the rules are scenario driven that might be all one side needs to play a game. I had best start the second force soonish....hmmm what to get? (I think I know, but not 100% sure yet.

    1. Thank you Simon/Blaxcleric. For this project Artillery next. For Matt aeronef and for LOTR King Théoden. All started or only just stared if I am honest.

I shall try to get the artillery as advanced as the rest, and hop it will be ready soon. Sunday or Tuesday. It should be simple enough... famous last words.

  5. Great stuff Clint, and definitely agree it should be King Théoden next for LotR since he's been waiting so patiently, and You've got infantry, they've got trucks, so an artillery piece is a great choice as the next episode of "BoB Builder"

    1. Thank you Addict. The very first colour is now on the Artillery. No surprises it is a green base colour. I had not though of BoB the builder. I shall use that as a title maybe when I build some aircraft! While Aircraft are not essential they will add to the game I feel.

  6. Great looking detachment Clint, Theoden would be an interesting model to see painted with all that leather armour

    1. Thank you Dave Only time will tell if Théoden will look OK. Needless to say WW1 Artillery does look a little strange. The Proportions seem wrong! But I have checked the internet and it is correct! Now I need to stop making excuses and pick up a paint brush!

  7. Excellent progress.....if the King has been on the bench for a year he definitely needs painting !🙂

    2. been digging through my LOTR boxes and suprised to find a lot more than I remember. Some are Obviously bring and buy purchases and need retouching and quiet a lot are raw figs. I've got the Urik box on the painting table so Theoden will have his hands full.

    3. Thank you Tim. And thanks for the Email as well. Hold your horses on LotR for a short while. As we will be using "Songs" you will not need many figs. So you probably already have enough.

  8. Good to see at least once force for BoB ready for action. KNowing very little on the period what are you options for opponents ?

    1. Thank you Joe. here are so many options for opponents. Firstly you rave the Russians. Red vs white vs Cossack (Red or white Cossack, Most were white Cossacks at the start supporting the Tsar)2 British forces, European British and Indian British, French, Turkish, Japanese, Afghan, Tibetan, Chinese Warlord (There could be several of these)American, etc etc etc. The options really are huge almost anyone could and was involved. It was not "The Great Game" for nothing.

A lot depend exactly what era you set it in. I will be looking at 1925-1935. As such I have about 16 armies to choose from. (and that is if I stick to Historically accurate ones)
