Samurai Opponents Started

I have just finished (literally 30 minutes ago) the first batch of Ashigaru for my opposing Samurai army. I have decided to create a Red themed opposing force. Some of you may be thinking about Yamagata Masakage ( LINK ) as I write red down in association with Samurai but the truth is that I just wanted a contrasting colour from the previous force. So being honest there is no big grand master plan.

As you can see there are eight bases of teppo (Arquebus) armed Ashigaru (light Foot) based and ready to take the field.  Again I went for a very simple Mon on the Sashimono back banners, two white circles on a red field. I probably could have made a more complex and accurate Mon, but this one really is sufficient for the task.

Thanks for looking today, Next update should be on Sunday. All the best Clint

    1. Thank you Phil. I must admit I am not a fan of red really but that does not mean the army needs to suffer because of my prejudice.

  2. Awesome Clint they look good in red. Do you have a particular deadline for this project?

    1. Thank you Simon. No deadline at all which makes it a pleasure. I do have a project coming up that will have a very ridged deadline, but more about that when it starts.

  3. Now the more I see of these, the more I feel the need for a Samurai collection! Great job Clint.

    1. Praise indeed Michael. Other things are moving up the painting schedule so I may have to take a break from Sams for a few weeks. But I might start St Searle's Girls instead!

  4. I immediately thought Ii Naomasa, as my red opposition is based n the Ii clan !

The whole thing is coming along quite rapidly !

    1. I had forgotten about Ii Naomasa who as you point out also was famous for Red armoured troops. I am Kicking myself as I have just read a book about Sekigahara so should have thought of him as well.
Thank you for reminding me Jo. Should you want one you can have a bonus point for pointing it out!

    2. "Always take whatever is offered", I was told, so I'll be adding my bonus point to the rest, making a current grand total of '1' !

  5. The red is a great choice. What rules are you going to use for these?

    1. Hi David, welcome to the blog and all that malarkey. Thank you for the comment. As for rules, I have looked at several, but settled on none which has lead to concerns about base sizes. At this stage I am probably going to make my own rules up as I want them very simple.

    2. At this scale and for mass combat I would have a look at DBM and pick out the relevant bits.

      -Just a thought.

    3. I already have some Ideas. I want it to be suitable for party play so it will have to me something straight forward. I was thinking DBA for the combat, which is why I have not mixed weapons on the stands.

      Thank you for the thought.

  6. Looking good Clint. I am not the biggest fan of red either, but it is a colour of the choice for all things opfor! :D

Make sure you take some time and post a pictures of both armies (when they're about equally sized, I suppose) on a nice japanese themed board (castle and cherry trees are a must!) :D

    1. Mathyoo you have an amazing capacity for suggesting things likely to get me side-tracked. Hmmm Japanese Castles I would love to build one. It would be terribly indulgent of course! When in many months time I have sufficient troops done I will do a picture of both forces. Thanks mate.

    2. I have two Japanese castles - one for my Dixon miniatures and I started another for my 6mm figures, although both are really only the central "keep".
In 6mm if I made the whole thing to the scale I'd made the "keep" it would have just fitted on a 3 foot square board !
You've got to make a castle - you know you want to and you haven't started a new project for ages.

    3. I will be starting a new project this tomorrow. So by the end of the week I will have something to show you. I might be starting 2 projects actually, possibly 3! But one of those is a small St Trinnian's Idea.

Yes I do want to build a castle, I have looked and there are some Japanese plastic construction kits nothing 1/200th (10mm scale) but several in 1/300-400th scale. A little small but well worth looking at.

But for now a Japanese Castle is not on the cards. A Samurai village set would be much more versatile.
