Yes my very first try of painting French Napoleonic's in any scale. So pleas point out anything the is wrong. So I can get better. I do not need anyone to get super fussy. If they look all right simply say so. IF you want to talk about the thread count of the linings then kindly find another victim.
Pedantic rivet counters are invited to keep their own council. Just generally do they look suitable for the wargames table?
Having Never painted French before I really did struggle to get these close to being right but I do realise I may have made a god awful gaff. So if it is glaringly obvious please point it out.
The figures are 28mm VICTRIX plastic and I have started the next 4 as well. Tim wants them in units of 12 for a game so any quick help would be appreciated.
They look very good. I might go a little darker with the blue with the next set. You might check the pompom colors, those distinguish the center companies from each other and might vary by year. Its been a long time since I have painted any French troops.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kris. Darker blue. Noted. As for the Pompom colours I just went from memory having seen them done by another player.
DeleteI like them Clint, I'm never worried about accuracy with my napoleonics, much to the horror of the purists.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andy. It is hard when you have never painted something before you wonder if you are even close to correct.
DeleteThey look just like nicely painted (and based)French Napoleonics to me Clint - members of a 4th fusilier company if their shako pompom is violet as it looks on my computer screen (which can make colours a bit dodgy)
ReplyDeleteNice job.
Thank you Addict. Yes Violet pompoms on the shakos. If that means the 4th Fusilier company so be it. I might do orange next! (I think that colour was used as well by a different company)
DeleteYep, you're right - orange is the second company.
DeleteThe first company is bright green and the 3rd light blue.
The grenadier company are red, and the light company green and/or yellow.
Hope you don't think I'm a rivet counter, but I always think the company colours are SO prominent, it was worth getting 'em right(ish) ;-)
Thanks Addict. No not at all, I found the info very helpful. I know I can go ahead WITH orange now if I choose. But for the moment I will stick with the Violet. After all I am only painting 12 figures so changing colours might seem a little odd.
DeleteGreat Naps Clint, must admit not a time period I am passionate about, so can't add anything other than I like what you've done
ReplyDeleteThank you Dave I will play Nappys but not with much enthusiasm. Like the ECW it is jut a period that does not excite me.
DeleteThey look great to me, although I agree with Kris - make the blue a bit darker. Other than that, I'd be very happy with them. It is such a long time since I played Napoleonics (late 1970's and early 1980's) but I still have a soft spot for it. Best of luck to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bryan. It is a period I know precious little about so I am really in the dark about them. I am just looking at picks and painting what I see with little regard to reality.
DeleteYou are a braver man than me and they look great Clint. Maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage to try Napoleonics.
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael. If I was not helping a friend I would not have attempted them.... at least I was not asked to do something odd... Like Legion Piemontaise Fusiliers for example.
DeleteLet us just say I am FAR enough out of my comfort zone as it is!
They look fab. I'm about to make the same error of judgement and paint 28mm naps. We must me bonkers
ReplyDeleteThank you Martin. YES bonkers together! I will take me a long while to get around to finishing the unit because I just do not know what I am doing at all.
DeleteIs there something in the air at the moment!
DeleteYes Dave I think it is weather related.
DeleteThey look great....remember they are large unit troops so it is mass effect ipeven in 28 mm. I would say you might even put less detail on them ?
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt. I really do appreciate the thought but as Tim wants only 12 figures to a unit I am not sure how I eel about less detail! It is something to think about though as it might be the answer to the tie constraints.
DeleteClint they look great. Im not 100% up on French colours being a Prussian player but as others mentioned a little bit darker on the blue and you have the pom pom colours sorted.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carl. I will go very slightly darker on the blue for the next 4 and darker still for the last 4. That way the first 4 will not stand out. (And it solves a repainting issue). And if anyone asks I can say the first 4 uniforms are older and the dye did not take as well and the sun bleached them and 101 other excuses!
DeleteLooking looking good overall Clnt. I would as a few have said go a shade darker on the blue
ReplyDeleteThank you Dave pretty much everyone has said go darker on the blue. So I shall for the next figures. (Which are now started btw).
DeleteThey look very French and Napoleonic - job done I'd say.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe. I will not change these fellows BUT I will pay attention for the next few.
