yep although I am sure it will be more "Carry on Follow that camel!" I am using the working title of "March or Dice!" (Maybe with the "C" in brackets, maybe not.
I am of course thinking of the French Foreign legion game that I have been planning.
For those not following this project it is an early 20th century "Beau Getste" skirmish game of the Arabs (Riff) versus the French Foreign Legion (And the Spanish, don't forget they were involved!)
I already have enough mounted Riffs (about 45 on camels) so here are 10 on foot. % armed tith swords and 5 with rifles. All the figures are by IT Miniatures (Here is a LINK) they are all metal WW1 20mm castings. The 3 Mules (or Donkeys) are also WW1 IT miniatures but in the British lists and not the Arab lists..
I will be looking at the "Songs of blades and heroes" engine but using the very nearly identical "Fist full of Kung Fu" Osprey rules. There will of course be a few amendments to represent the setting, but these should be very minor.
With luck I will have enough done for a club game on Sunday.
Cheers Clint
One of my first campaign was based around this genre (using Airfix figures) so it's a great bit of nostalgia for me and I'm really looking forward to seeing where you go with this project.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe. Hopefully I will not take too long to get it going. The Plan is for Sunday (fingers Crossed)
DeleteLooking good Clint, look forward to reading the BatRep, to see which way it played out, your idea or ending up as Follow That Camel
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave. A LOT (a WHOLE lot) will depend on who plays... certain peeps you just know will almost play for laughs!
DeleteWe had a great game on year with a ref who would throw in mad things like having to polish ammunition if there had been a sandstorm or a camel had dropped it's load and then later a gun jammed. on the subject of camels never load gelignite on them in the desert the camle explodes on a bad dice throw :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike. LOL don't give me too many ideas just yet. let us get a trial game done first.... after that the sky is the limit (assuming it works OK)
Delete45 on camels! Are you sure you're not in a dromedary arms race with Dave Docherty?
ReplyDeleteI've only ever seen the 'Carry On' and no other FFL films so I'm always thinking of the Modern when I read FFL, so it'll be a nice reminder for me seeing them in their C19th campaigns. Oh, tell a lie, I saw that film 'Deserter' with Tom Hardy, set in Algeria of the 1950s.
Thanks Roy. I have just come from Col Bills store.... nothing at present. Beau Geste is the classic book, TV series and film of the period. And I am sure you know the story. And the dateline is 1918-1921 so still 20th century. So if I said 19th Century I apologise, but that sounds like what I would do. The French Foreign Legion (and the Spanish Foreign Legion... but that is a LOT less well known.) I suggest you look on YouTube quickly for the film "March or Die!" or Beau Geste if you have not seen that to get you in the mood.
DeleteAh, no, my mistake. You did write C20th. And WW1 models were being used, several times. Just shows I forgot what I read within 2 seconds. Whoops!
DeleteNo worries we all do it. And being honest it Could SO easily be my mistake. Nice to have people like you to keep me on my toes.
DeleteThis really is sounding (and looking) more and more like a French Foreign legion project which could start me painting Beau Geste minis too. Your enthusiasm for it is terribly infectious, so keep up the good work :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon. The joy is once you have the terrain it is straight forward. Making the terrain is alas not so easy. My advice is to see how I get on and then decide. It may be a total flop.
DeleteI've yet to see any of your projects flop, Clint, so I'm looking forward to seeing your terrain.
DeleteThank you for the vote of confidence. many of my projects DO fail and many flop. But then I am my own harshest critic so ...... well you know how that goes.
DeleteCan't say I'm familiar with the examples you mentioned, but the project sounds (and looks) great! Look forward to reading more about the battle
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul the Riff war is seldom wargamed. So I am not at all surprised that one honest person admits to knowing nothing about it (I make that 2 of us). We shall see if I get everything ready in time for Sunday..... touch and go at the moment.
DeleteBest of luck, Clint. This is looking like a fun little project.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bryan. IF it works it should be Good. But the nagging feeling at the back of my mind suggests that it may not.
DeletePessimism aside I have reasonable/high hopes for a positive outcome.....
